Sunway University 24 Festive Drums Our Dream 10th Anniversary Concert《

It's always written in the stars!

The Golden Gallop New Spring Arising

大家期待的环节即将登场 —— MY 和 Go Xuan 的电台主持人们 —— Maq 赖铭权 (MY)、Jenn (MY)、 Kryston 温杨 (Go Xuan)和Kayley 凯欣(Go Xuan)跟大家见面啦!

万事 All Right 酷哒哒! See you in the next campus event!

Sunway Alumni Homecoming FamFest (11/10/2025)

When we think about alumni homecoming events, what is the first thing that comes to mind? Is it all the glitz and glam at the traditional gala with a big ticket? Well, this is about to change your perception on homecoming events. This time, The Sunway Alumni breaks tradition with a fun-fair theme - it's the Sunway Alumni Homecoming FamFest! I already knew about the event during my last visit to campus but at that time I didn't know I was going to make to the homecoming. Last year, I didn't make it, I was really upset of missing it.

Not now, not today! After my mummy dropped me off, I head to the Career Hub at the university foyer and the first thing is to head for the Coca-Cola! I wait for Ren Khai's arrival. Once Ren Khai arrived, we head to the registry counter to get my ticket scanned and it's off to the game station! The first stop is the Quack Attack - the players have to use a nerf gun to shoot as many duckies as you can but unfortunately the ducks didn't get knock over. Ren Khai and I even get some photos of each other.

The Quack Attack, give me the nerf gun!

I didn't get a strike, still managed to get some pins down.

Ren Khai trying his hands on the Quack Attack.

The next stop is table top bowling - instead of the regular blowing - this game you have to toss to have a strike. I didn't get a strike but manage to knock down a few pins, I think. Moving on, we head to the Amazing Race - a team of five - and I'm lucky to be invited by a few alumni to be on their team. The first question is easy - which SDG is targeted to lifelong education? Well, this has to be related ton my day-job, if I don't get this right, I don't know what to say. The answer is just right above us. It's SDG 4: Quality Education!

We take photo at the iconic I ❤️SU logo as part of the challenge, follow by the Sunbirds near the Lecture Theatres - we spread our wings like we're flying! Reminds me of Westlife's very first single - Flying Without Wings - from their self-titled album.

We go on Hunger Games full mode with archery! My teammates got a hold of it while I'm struggling to get the bow and arrow right, I'm lucky to have a patient instructor to guide me all the way through and I manage to shoot it!

The games are all fun, it's time to have a rest at Fresco - the university's canteen. I bump into Mr. Tee - who is the teacher advisor of the Sunway University Buddhist Society (SBS). He asks whether I come back to campus often. "Yeah, my last visit was just last month for an alumni mini-event," I say. Ren Khai even reveals that if any recording that is happening on campus, he'll invite me over to have a look because we both share the same interests in the Malaysian singers in the entertainment industry. "You are very lucky to have a friend like Ren Khai, do appreciate," says Mr. Tee. I'll definitely appreciate the people around me.

Sunway University Buddhist Society's teacher advisor - Mr. Tee.

We also have a chat with the lecturers at Fresco too. Not long after that, we head back to the main stage for a lucky draw. I didn't get anything on the lucky draw but at least the luckiest day is able to attend the homecoming event.

After all the fun, we headed to a Japanese restaurant near campus to fill up the tummies. Jason, Ethel, Elyssa are waiting for me and Ren Khai. They are just about to order the food. We chatted a lot on our interest and the courses we studied in university and on campus. Little did I know, Ethel and Elyssa are my juniors of the Monash University Foundation Year (MUFY).

Lunch time with a Japanese meal

To end the day, I drop by the library to chill out. I'm looking forward to the next alumni event! Once a Sunwayian, always a Sunwayian.

Back to University: 《The Music Journey

“Can I take a photo with you please?”

Back to University: Frame by Frame Photography 101 (22/3/2025)

I have a passion for photography and that passion dated way back when I was 13, it’s not until I was 16, that I had my first camera - the Canon Ixus. After that, I used either the iPod or the iPhone, which I’m using now.

Six years later, my passion for photography sparked up again when I read about the then-Duchess of Cambridge now The Princess of Wales - Princess Catherine also known as Princess Kate, has a passion for photography! On Christmas 2019, my uncle bought me a camera, so I have been using it ever since for any big events or just taking it out to brush up my skills for a bit.

As anyone who wants to show the skills and practice, I didn’t have the chance to show my talent. Finally, my passion is put to the test with Frame by Frame: Photography 101 with Graeme Tan. I’m quite excited because I have watched short episodes of the Sip and Spill segment on Instagram and I have a few favourites.

The basics from aperture to ISO - everything we need to know how to take the “perfect” shot. After knowing the basics, it’s time to apply them. With Shayne being the “model” of the day, we try a few scenarios to see the difference. I have some trouble adjusting my camera settings to manual mode but Andrew was on hand to help.

Shayne being the “model” at the workshop.

A close up shot of a camera model.

Here comes the fun part of the photography workshop. Each team is given a scenario to take a shot. The first team is to advertise for a new brand while the second team is taking a mock demonstration of coffee making by Shayne. My team is the third one which is playing journalists for the day to take people around Sunway. As a communication graduate, this got me excited!

Although we were rejected by a couple of people, we still got to take some shots on campus. Such a coincidence, that it was an info day for the Sunway Foundation Programs (Foundation in Science & Technology & Foundation in Arts) and Australian Matriculation known as AUSMAT. When we head back to the studio, the second team is still taking some pictures at the coffee demonstration.

Taking people around Sunway campus.

After analysing each picture from the three teams, there are some room for improvement. Each of us is presented with the Frame by Frame: Photography 101 certificate completion, it’s in a frame too! I can’t wait for the next alumni event!

I have completed the course presented by Ms. Sue-Ann (left) and Graeme (right).

Me and my camera are the perfect shot to capture every moment! I can picture this, can you?

Back to University: Online Lecture (8/4/2020)

It's back to university! What am I going to do? I'm back in my hometown. I'm going to university online. It's true! All the classes for this semester will assessed online, which means university from home. Due to the outbreak of Covid-19 in the country, we are on the second phase of the movement control order (MCO), we're staying put until the order is over.

I'm all set for the semester cause I'll be here in my hometown, Melaka. Usually I will pack food from home and bring it to campus but this time I have home cooked food. Talk about going to classrooms, I have to wait to be at the lift by half an hour before class starts, cause by 15 minutes before class, everybody will be lining up and it will get squishy. At home, I set my alarm clock, have some breakfast and set up the computer an hour class, I'm good to go. It's advisable to wake three or two hours before class time, so we have enough time to buffer and get everything done.

Recently, during the MCO period I was hooking up to games which I left off. Now that university has already started, it's the best to put a timer to time ourselves for not going overboard on the games. Do not miss any class no matter virtually or face-to-face and always be on time! It's a good practice, when we go to the working world punctuality is everything unless we have a leeway in between.

Another tip on university from home is make sure the room that we are in is noise free, good connection of the Internet (sometimes we will face bad connection), a big study space to put all the university go-to "essentials" such as books, laptop, pencil box, phone, iPad etc. Most importantly make ourselves presentable, some lecturers want to see our faces, be confident and don't be camera shy. Also, have a good set of earphones if we wanna block out the noise around us.

Instead of a physical classroom, we use Zoom as a virtual classroom to be connected with our lecturers and course mates. I'm really happy to see all of my course mates again. We may not see each other like we used before on campus but I'm sure we will meet physically one day. This semester is going to a bumpy ride, I hope I can achieve my goals! Hope everyone stays safe.

Back to University: Year 3 Semester 2 (20/8/19)

The Malaysian school holiday had came to an end, for Sunway University students were no exception. It's back to university after a months' break! Usually around this time, our results will be released but it was announced a week before the new semester. Unfortunately, luck was not on my side this time. I'm not giving up! There's always a second time around.

I just left five minutes before the first class which was Investor Relations. I had a hard time looking for the looking for the classroom, luckily one of the staffs kindly guided me. As I reached the classroom, it was announced that lecture was cancelled and will be replaced tomorrow. I headed back down to the university foyer again. Pam, my best friend,  and I decided to meet up.

I was looking out for her, there was a photo of me was taken from the back. I turned around, Pam was walking to me. "Hi Kar Marn, long time no see! How are you?" we gave each other a big hug. "I'm good! I'm so excited for the new semester!" I said. We chatted all the way, and I thought, it's nice to catch up with your course mates after a month's break. We all also bumped into our fellow course mate, Nasrin, too! Nasrin and Pam decided to go to the library to chill and relax a bit, while I have a catch up with Hanis and Lit An.

Hanis and I were about to make a move to Subway for brunch, Lit An called. "We're coming in a bit," said Hanis. As a matter of fact, I had a quick catch up with my cousin while were on the way to Subway. Just down a few rows of shops and cafes, we made it to Subway. Also, it was a "late celebration" as Lit An just officially graduated from university. After that, Hanis and Lit An escorted me to my classroom for political communication- it was the same classroom that I went earlier at 8am.

Luckily political communication this time around is no exam, which means it's a 100% coursework. That doesn't mean I could just slack off easily, I need to give 100% of the effort that I need to put in as this is a core subject for my specialisation- Corporate Communication. Once the first lecture had ended, Pam and I headed for Family Mart to have our girls' day out with some ice cream to ward off intense heat.

We decided to drop by at the college link bridge to check out what they had in store. Apparently, SPAIR is having an event called Beyond Tomorrow, and two of our course mates, Raphael and Yuki, are apart of the event. We saw free packets of MAMEE but on the basket there was note stated that "free food upon registration". Raph kind of hurt himself a little when he was packing the bunting.

It's time for me to head home. This is my last chance to prove myself that I can do anything. When you ever doubt yourself, just remember those who always stand by you.

26 March 2019

Back to University: The Final Year (25/3/19)

The school holidays for Malaysian schools have already started, as for Sunway University students it's the other way round, time for them to head back to university! Yes, I'm in my final year of university! I'm so excited! After my mum drops me off, my journey to the final year officially begins!

I'm heading to the library, I bump into my best friends Hanis and Ishaq. They are heading out for the moment but sadly I can't join them as I just arrived on campus. I decide to walk around a little before heading to the library. Sunway Peer Councelling Volunteer (PCV) is having a campaign called "Positive Me" to spread positivity around campus. I left a note and stick it to a positive tree. Positive tree, positive me! Get it? No, okay! Let's proceed to the journey.

The first lecture starts later in the afternoon today, so I watched some videos which are going to be taught later. I bump into Wai Loon, while I'm watching the videos. "Hey Kar Marn, how are you? Long time no see!" he said. "I'm doing good! What are you doing at the moment?" I ask. "Just some stuff to handle for the Chinese Cultural Society. How about you?" he said, I tell him that I'm watching some videos to prepare for the first lecture.

I left half an hour, I quickly pack up my stuff and double check to make sure that I didn't leave anything behind on the computer table. I head out of the library, one question pops into my mind: "Which side of the lift leads to the classroom? The East or the West building?" Why not try the East side? No harm trying! I have a star struck moment with Chef Patrick Siau while I'm on my way to lecture, whose team was the champion of the dessert competition in France earlier this year.

Sure enough, I reached the classroom! I look at the time displayed on the big screen. Really? Four minutes? That's fast! Usually it takes me about five to 10 minutes to get to class. Well, since I have the whole classroom to myself. I continue to watch the videos which I left off, Chelsea gives me a big fright when she comes in. Guess I'm too engross without knowing the presence of my course mate.

One by one, my other course mates start to come in. Before the lecturer comes in, Chia Ming and Sonia talk about their experiences on internship earlier this year. Not long after, Dr. Leong, our Political Communication lecturer, we were under her for Law and Ethics in Communication back in Year 2 last year.

After class, I bump into my friend, Pam. We chat about what we had done over the holidays and the subjects we are taking now. It's so awesome to see your friends again after the semester break. What could I ask more?

Join Katelyn in a whole new world, as she steps into her final year of university. One step closer to fulfill her dream

Back to University: Year 2 Semester 3 (7/1/19)

The Malaysian new school season had already started, and for Sunway University was no exception. It’s back to university for us too! Time to hit the books and gear up for a whole new semester to ring in 2019.

I was really excited as I’m starting my third and final semester of Year 2. After settling down in the library, I had a tummy upset. I guessed we couldn’t avoid the nervousness no matter how confident we are. Anyway, after I made my way up, I received an email from the course department that the results from the previous semester (Year 2 semester 2) were released.

Quickly, I checked the results and made it through the second semester, which means the third semester of is officially on the run! I informed my family and friends about my achievement. After checking the results one last time, I logged out of the computer and settled at the university foyer. The Sunway University Chinese Cultural Society (SUCCS) was looking for potential actor and actress for their upcoming stage play.

I popped my bag at their booth for awhile and made my way to the college building to check out if there's any interesting, I ended up bumping into a few friends and course mates who I haven't seen over the holidays. As I was scrolling through my phone, my best friend and former MUFY course mate, XY, texted me whether I was on campus.

I had about half an hour before lecture, I guessed a little meet up would be fine since I didn't meet her for a long time. What a surprise! An unexpected visit! I took a photo of my location so that XY could easily look for me. She eventually read my mind! She brought me a drink from YOY Tea cafe, which I initially planned to go the place itself. I had a grape-lemon drink, it was really refreshing to ward off the intense heat and a cool way to chill before the first and only class started.

The time was neared 2pm, I headed to class and seemed to me everyone was excited to see their course mates after the month-long holiday, and I was no exception. I had a good catch up with some of the kids in the August 2017 batch from my course, Communication.

What an awesome way to ring in the new semester and new year! Join Katelyn in a whole new musical journey as she resumes her first day of university of the year.

21 August 2018

Back to University: Year 2 Semester 2 (21/8/18)

School is out for primary and secondary school students, but for the students at Sunway University, it's back to university after a long month of semester break. Yesterday was a big day for us, because the examination results of our previous semester were released! I was super happy with my results because I passed every subject, so I'm officially stepping into Year 2 semester 2!

I head to my favourite place on campus- the library, to chill out before the first lecture begins at 10am. At around 9.30am, I make my way to the first lecture of the day which is Intercultural Communication. As I reach the classroom, my course mates are already in there. "Hey girls, nice to see you all again!" I say as I make my way to my seat. "It's so good to see you too!" Jaya says.

Ms. Serena comes in and lecture begins! It's not really a lecture but more of a introductory of the subject of Intercultural Communication. I'm going to see her again at Psychology in Communication later on. I have a three-hour break, where should I go to first?

I come across the Sunway Peer Counseling Volunteer (PCV) booth at the university foyer. They have an upcoming event which is focusing on mental health. I have a passion in mental health. "Hi, are you interested to sign up for one of our job scopes? We are currently looking for students to fill up these roles," I study the flyer, they have job scopes such as poster designing, photography and video editing. I don't fill the requirements in any of the job scopes. "I'm sorry, I don't fill in any of the requirements," I say.

"It's alright! Would you like to leave a message?" the student asks me. I leave a message that it is okay to say, we can't just keep things to ourselves. As I'm making my way to the college lift, I bump into a student who I met at Sunway Model United Nations (SUNMUN) earlier this month. "Yes! I do remember you! You're the admin in UNHRC right?" I say. "Yes, yes I am! Where are you off to?" he asks.

I'm heading to the MUFY office, but also checking out the activities that are happening now around campus. Just before I head to the lift, there are some booths along the link bridge. Why not check them out for awhile? Sunway Student Volunteers (SSV) is having an event which is Run Towards the 17 Goals. I can't run but I'm passionate in Goals 3 and 4- quality in education and goodness in well being . I bump into my friend, Jia Xin. We have a short chat as he is going out for lunch with his friends.

As I enter the MUFY student hub, the juniors staring at me. Probably they didn't see me around before, but I bump into Daniel, who I met at SUNMUN. My lecturers are very happy to see me, and I get to talk to my new juniors. To fill up my free time, I watch some videos online to pass the time since there is no assignment yet.

I go to the wrong class, so I rush to the university because I'm missing a lot right now. I take a tumble while I'm on my way to UW 7-6, luckily my course mate helps me up. I'm running of breath but after I settle myself down, it is back to normal. Ms. Serena gives us an insight of Psychology in Communication, and the first two assignments are up for the day. One is an opinion paper and the other is a group project.

I'm looking forward to the new semester and I'm going to give my best. What's in store for Katelyn this time?

Back to University: Heading to Year 2 (27/3/18)

The alarm rings, the moment I wake up I know a new journey is about to begin. Yes, I'm officially into Year 2 in BA (Hons) Communication, specialising in Corporate Communication. It's been raining cats and dogs lately, the fine weather kinda calm my nervousness while I'm on the road to Sunway University.

My first lecture of Year 2 is Law and Ethics in Communication. Law is not really my interest because we can be very "opinionated" at some point, so I tell myself that I'm never going to pursue law in my degree as a major. Well, I guess I'm wrong. No matter which course we are taking in our degree, there is a law subject as a minor. At least, we get to know the rules and regulations before we venture into the real world.

Turns out law subject isn't so bad after all! We'll learn more in detail when we go deeper into the semester. After the lecture, we have a four-hour break. What to do during a four-hour break? I have to settle my timetable, because everything was settled over the break except for Law and Ethics in Communication tutorial slot because there was a technical issue in the system. Lucky for me, luck is definitely on my side today as I manage to sign up the tutorial slot!

My classmate, Wai Teng, and I try to self enrolled our signed up subjects but it doesn't work out on either our smartphones or iPad, only one way to find out is to log on to the computer which are available in the library. Second luck I finally enrolled, it takes awhile to get use to the new elearn portal website.

Prior to Media Relations and Public Affairs lecture, the girls didn't know how to enroll the subjects. "We managed to enroll. Well, Kar Marn taught me how to enroll," Wai Teng pointing to me. "Really? Kar Marn, can you show me or write the steps on how to enroll?" Lavanya asks. I write the first five steps, the last step is not counted but I add a word "done" along with a smiley face. "You're a smart girl!" Lavanya says. "The smiley face is super cute! Should upload it to the batch's group chat," Chelsea adds.

What's up for Katelyn this time? Join in her musical journey as she steps into her second year of university where more music are waiting for her to compose and find her inner voice.

First Day of Year 1 Semester 3 (8/1/18)

The school season started last week, but today the students of Sunway University College headed back for their new semester after months of break. The first lecture of today was Tamadun Islam dan Tamadun Asia, it’s TITAS for short but the English name for this subject is called Islamic and Asia Civilisation. It’s a compulsory subject for every Malaysian student and we have to pass it too in order to earn our certificate upon graduation.

The subject is in Malay, and I didn’t touch the language nor speak the language since I graduated from high school for almost four years. Although I passed the subject in my SPM, learning a new subject with the language again, it’s gonna be a challenge. As a Malaysian, I still speak Malay but not so much like I did in high school.

There were two tasks or rather course work to choose from as part of the subject. The first one was attending a day camp or the second one which was creating a video based on the topic which is going to be given by the lecturer later on. The day camp each group must consist of 10 students, as always I’m the one who is “left out” but it’s okay, I’m sure one of the groups have to “accept” me.
When it was about 9.45am, everyone in JC3 Hall started to stretch their tired legs and some of them were about to doze off. Our lecturer, Dr. Yaccob, who “witnessed” the scene, she said: “Since it’s the first day, I’ll let you kids go off. We’ll continue on Wednesday.” I was coming down the steps of the auditorium aisle, my new classmate, Feng, who gave me a helping hand.

Ivan, my course mate offered to escort me down to the university’s foyer. After that, I headed to Sunway University Buddhist Society (SBS) booth to recruit students for our upcoming musical in June! Isn’t this exciting? That’s one way to ring in the new semester!

I’m happy to see my friends again! New year, new semester! Gotta work hard!

Back to University (23/5/17)

One week of semester break just ended, it is time to get some energy and head back to university! It's back to university for me and yes, I have a test later today in the afternoon. What a coincidence my morning lectures and tutorials are cancelled so which leave me a lot of time to prep myself up for the test, more or less since I studied at the last minute when I came back from my hometown, Melaka. I try to kick off this "last minute" habit but turns out it didn't. I guess it's every student bad habit in every part of the education journey. Let's just face it, being students we will always this bad habit- doing everything at the eleventh hour. Jokes aside, let's move on to the serious part.

At 7.58am, I reach at the parking lot of the campus. Two minutes till the library is opened. The moment when the doors of library is opened, the students are lining up to get their cards scanned prior entering to the library. I arrive just in time and go to my usual computer spot to check out the latest announcements on the campus' learning portal- BlackBoard eLearn. I was caught up with countless assignments over the semester break which I forgot that I have a role to fill in for the upcoming presentation. I went to Google Slides to fill my "empty spot" up. I was too late, my group mate helped me to back up with the details so what I can do is just adding some pictures to make the slides look attractive and a change of font colour to make it more vibrant.

I booked the computer for two hours, 15 minutes left before the time expires I quickly pack my stuff up and ask one of the students to bring me down to the basement floor. Lucky me, a student just done with the computer. I almost fall off the chair but luckily I ask a girl to help me with it. You know it's really tricky to control the roller chairs when you have bad motor skills coordination.

After spending four hours in the library, it's time for me to head out to get some fresh air. After having my lunch, I move to the tables near the fountain. I love to listen the incessant of the water which can calm your nerves down. My classmates and I meet up for an assignment which is Corporate Communication. Although I supposed to hand in my part of the report last Saturday but I was too caught up with English synthesis essay.

Once the test is over for Introduction to Consumer Behaviour, it's time to get my hands on the Crisis Communication report for Corporate Communication. I can do this! I'm happy I'm back to university to reunite with my friends.
