St. David High School Carnival 2018 (7/4/18)

It's been almost two years since I last visited my secondary alma mater- SMK Tinggi St. David Melaka or also known as St. David High School Melaka. The last time I visited was during my younger sister's report card day back in 2016. Flash forward to 2018, it's time for me to go back to school to help out. Clad in my St. David Buddhist Society t-shirt, I paired with my trustee Adidas neo shoes and blue jeans.

Once I reached the school gate, a lot of things had changed since I left the school four years ago. The guard house changed from white coating to pink. Along the newspaper reading corner, some book shelves were placed with educational magazine. Even some new murals were added. I had a hard time finding the Buddhist Society stall. Yes, I was a member of the society when I was in Form 4. Luckily, Ms. Leong, the school's counselling teacher, asked one of the juniors to guide me there.

"Hey guys, I'm here!" I greeted the juniors when I reached the stall. "Hey, you're here!" the juniors were happy to see me as their senior was back to help them out, also giving back to the school at the same time. "So what can I do to help?" I asked. Sheng Ren, the president of the Buddhist Society, said: "Each game station costs RM 3.00. If a customer plays at least three types of games is considered a set. They will redeem a prize."

There were four game stations. First was the balloon darts followed by knocking out the cans, words forming and so on. I didn't buy any of the coupons, I just played the game on a test run. The carnival just started not long, rain showers began to pour. Lucky for us, we had tents to keep us dry.

The first batch of seniors I saw was the 94 batch. "It's been six years since I last saw you! How are you? University life treating you well?" asked Adrian, who was the school captain (head prefect) from 2010-2011. I told them that I'm doing well, currently pursuing my major in Corporate Communication in university. "Oh wow! Time flies! The last time we saw you, you were in Form 2!" Yin Sze said.

Not long after, I finally met the kids in my batch. "Hi Kar Marn!" Ben walking over and gave me hug. "Hi Ben! How are you?" I asked. All the kids in my batch were talking about university life and what we were up to these days. The good old days were back when you gathered with your friends at the most anticipated carnival.

While there was no one at the stall, I decided to take a stroll around the school. I was resting at one of the table at the canteen, I bumped into my seniors Megan, Sherwin and Victor! "Katelyn, long time no see! How are you?" Megan greeted me with a hug. "I'm good and how about you guys?" I asked. They are good as well, some of them are graduating from university this year. Tung, another senior of mine, introduced her university mates to me and the other seniors. "Oh yeah, this is my junior, Katelyn!"

We strolled along the school field and met even more juniors and seniors! Even we met up with the Principal, Mr. Chay. As it was starting to heat up, the seniors brought me back to the game station as they were afraid that I would get a sun burn. They promised me they would be back after they were done with food hunting. As the time was nearly, 2.30pm, the number of customers started to subside and most of them already went home to have a good rest. I did have a good chat with my juniors from the 99 batch (the last 90's babies).

In high school, I was just your average high school girl. I'm super happy that I have the chance to come back and support the school. I'm looking forward to the next carnival.

Enter to learn, depart to serve. I'm proud to be in St. David High School! I'm proud to be a St. Davidian!

St. David's High School Report Card Day 2016 (29/6/16)

.  It's the yearly report card day in St. David High School, Malacca. Report Card Day is also known as Parents' Day in Malaysian schools. On this very day, parents come to school to collect the students' report card and also get to know their children's day to day basis in school. Well, since I'm on my semester break from college, I might as well to drop by to my secondary alma mater.

At around 1.30pm, I started packing my stuff into trustee sling bag. Sunglasses to ward off the heat, hand phone for emergency and of course iPod for picture taking just in case. As the car stopped by the school gate, my grandma dropped off. The security guard opened the main gate for us, memories of high school were coming back to me. It felt like yesterday I started my high school life for the first time six years ago.

A lot of parents were at the canteen waiting for the school bell to ring because usually the bell rings at 2.10pm. Along the way, we bumped into my juniors, counselling teachers and parents. We walked all the to the new building because that's where Form Five's classrooms are. My grandma and I came to school to collect my sister's report card. Actually, grandma was doing the collecting part while I just catching up who I haven't seen them in three months. They visited to Sunway University College in March during their first school holiday of the year.

We climbed four flights of steps, it wasn't very tiring because I climbed them during my final year in high school. The moment I reached the top, the first junior I saw was Praveena, who is the former school captain. "Hey, Praveena! Happy 17th birthday!" I gave a pat on her arm. "Thank you so much, Kar Marn. I'm so happy to see you!" she said. "So am I!"  All fifth formers in the prefect and librarian boards will "retire" four months before the SPM examination. They will pass the job on to the forth formers.

Students arranged the chairs along the corridor for the parents to sit. Well, to me, it's more like a patient who is waiting his or her turn at the clinic. Oh, I'm just pulling your leg. But seriously, the chairs were for the parents to wait for their turn to see the teachers. While grandma was waiting for her turn, I got a catch up with my juniors and some of my primary alma mater teachers' children are studying in the high school as well.

Once it's my sister's turn to see the teacher, I quickly got up from my seat and walked to the class. While she was packing her stuff, I got a small catch up with my former Modern Mathematics teacher, Puan Hoe Kim Yub. I passed the mobile phone to my sister to call my aunt that we were leaving the classroom. But somehow, grandma saw some friends which made her stopped in her tracks and had a chat with them. I dropped by to 5Sc1 to say "hi" to my physical education teacher, Mr. Sasi. I would love to sit and chat with my juniors but we were on a rush.

As I was about to descend the stairs, I saw my senior, Hwee San, who was wearing a black laced dress. Now it was my turn to stop in my tracks to have a small chat with her. We even took a selfie too. On our way out, we bumped into my Form One Bahasa Melayu teacher, Encik Asmi, even we bumped into the Principal, Mr. Chay Yew Choon and the Senior Assitant of Affair teacher, Mr. Tam Siew Shong. There were prefects at the school gate to escort the parents to their children's classes.

We were waiting for the car, I talked to Grace and as well as the birthday girl, Paraveena. We sang a birthday song for her. As the car came, we walked through the side gate. The weather was scorching hot so we have to speed up our walking to prevent from getting burned. Of course, we had to watch out for cars as well since it was after-school time.

But what's more important that my "mission" is accomplished! Looking forward to have another visit in the future.

Reunion with My High School Juniors (17/3/16)

Joni and I were exiting from the library to head our economic class. I looked through the transparent auto sliding door. The students of SDHS Melaka, class of 2016 came to Sunway University College for an educational visit. I spotted Mr. Tan, who is the school's counselling teacher. "Mr. Tan!" I called. "Kar Marn, I'm so glad to see you again. How's college life?" I said everything was going on well.

I introduced Joni to my teacher. Mr. Tan thanked Joni for taking care of me and willing to be my friend. Joni said "It's all my pleasure, teacher," Before we leave, Mr. Tan and I took a photo, he said :" I'm going to show it to Mr. Chay when get back to Melaka." They are leaving for Melaka at around 2.30pm. I had class so I won't be seeing my juniors. We rushed to economic class. Luckily we arrived there just in time. No harm done! After that, I headed for the IT Learning Lab at the first floor to look for my friends but they weren't there. And oh my, they sure gave me a "wild goose chase"! The good part was I did my exercise by sweating out.

I sat there in disappointment. Desperately took out my phone to call and text them but in vain. I saw my friend, Konomi who was about to head to the library, it's a good thing because the library is just nearby the cafeteria. I bumped into my friends at the cafeteria, one of the groups were not comfortable in my presence. "Thanks. I'll just go look for another seat," I said walking away. That's fine by me, who needs you when you're not really their true friends right? I looked for another group of friends.

Charis and I went to the Japanese food stall to order. While I was waiting for the food, Charis bought a can of coke for me because I'm so thirsty after all that "wild goose chase". A can of coke will definitely quench your thirst, especially on a hot day. The both of us headed to the North Building because I was having my last class of the day which is English- my favourite subject. We discussed on Mrs. Sen. My friends dropped me off at the usual waiting place. Well, I won't be seeing my juniors and the time was still early. A little game won't hurt right? I bumped into Wui Fang- who was my English course mate in my first semester.

As we were talking, I saw my juniors were walking out. I thought they went back. I didn't know they were still hanging around the campus. I guess it's fated for me to meet up with the juniors after half a year since I last saw them. "Hey, we didn't expect to bump into you!" my juniors said. "So am I!" I said. It was such a coincidence, Prem was at the foyer too. Both SDHS graduates of the 2014 class had a chat with their teacher. "Mr. Tan, send my regards to your kids," I said. "I will. Thanks for remembering them," he said.

I'm glad that I met up with my juniors and teachers from my secondary alma mater. I'm hoping to see some of them in the future. SDHS juniors, be more, do more, be all you can be at Sunway- where learning come to life (Sunway orientation video) .
