Media technology practical class ends, I head over to the BeYoutiful campaign photo gallery. BeYoutiful campaign? Sounds familiar to you? Well, if you check out my last post on the campaign’s carnival, I’m sure you will recall back what happened on that day.
After settling myself down, I walk around to take a look at the college boulevard. It’s not ready yet as the seniors are doing some last-minute preparation on the photo gallery so students who come to drop by will feel the love all around on this beYoutiful day! Get it? Beautiful, beYoutiful? No, okay! Let’s move on.
I come across the photo gallery. I see the photos which were taken during the BeYoutiful carnival. Most of my course mates pictures are up, but where’s mine? Well, probably I have to drop by tomorrow to see whether it’s up on the second batch of the photo gallery.
Remember about the “breaking barriers”? Writing your insecurities on the board and giving it a good punch after that, it’s back for a second time around! Plus, there’s a message board for us to write encouraging messages to everyone that it is okay to be ourselves and don’t change because of someone else, because we are beYoutiful in our own unique way.
Unfortunately, I have to miss the performances and the event lauch as I have a lecture to attend. I can drop by on the last day as the event will be running for two days.
Miss out the first day? Drop by on the second and final day of BeYoutiful photo gallery, you might spot yourself in there! It’s a good way to end the first week of university since resuming from the semester break. If you see two “fishies” in yellow and orange, show off some shaking moves to shake a new self.

华文学会第一辩论课堂（22/5/18）
漫长一个星期的休假来到了尾声，双威大学学生们返回校园上课啦！开学的第一天，就有课外活动。什么活动呢？当然是华文学会举办的辩论课堂！我相信大家会问：“什么是辩论？” 以我的看法是把对方打得很难堪，直到 “投降” 为止。想知道什么是辩论，接下来你就会知道！
啊，不过呢，让我来向你们介绍辩论课堂的老师—— 李荣森老师。李老师是毕业于马来亚大学，他和颜如晶是同届的大马代表辩论选手。相信对《奇葩说》这中国辩论综艺节目不陌生吧？大约晚上七时十分。华文学会会员陆续到来，李荣森老师也到了。那么话不多说，我们正式上课！
辩论有分三位辩手：主辩、二辩以及结尾辩。哪它们三个的在辩论里扮的角色是什么呢？主辩手是以开场为主，而二辩手则把主题切入更深的一层；这时候我们就可以看到双方辩手 ”互相残杀” ，也让整个辩论赛场变得精彩！总是也要来个尾声吧？结尾辩手把整个主题梳理整合，让辩论赛场画上句点。
好了，辩手的角色之后，我们正式进入正题！第一个主题是：消费税或大马人民所熟悉的GST，是否应该消费呢？有几位同学赞成保留消费税，而有些反对。老师问我：“你呢？” 我说：“老师，我保持中立。” 老师赞叹道：“哇，你们不知道赚钱的辛苦！好了，话不多说！我们正式开始！”
然后，老师说辩论时间分为三十秒、一分钟及三分钟。接下来的主题是—— 《喝水对健康好》。我是以三十秒为开场。老师给我的指点是：强调在水帮我们生物解渴就可以了。最后一个课题就是—— 《小三是没错的》。小三在爱情里是被旁人说的 “爱情破坏者” ，说不定哦！同学们纷纷对小三的意见。
我们如何把辩论说得较顺畅呢？老师有给我们个意见，就是我们拿最喜欢的的事物，对着它说四分钟或看新闻时候，记录主播们的对白再给自己锻炼。

BeYoutiful SU Carnival (4/5/18)
Public Relations Writing lecture ends at 11.30am, my course mates and I head over to the boulevard at Sunway College to support our seniors in conjunction with their campaign- BeaYoutiful. What is BeYoutiful campaign? It's about self-love and self-acceptance. I mean we all try to change for someone who we are not right? With this, students can redefine what does beauty really mean to them.
I'm about to head down the stairs, Ishaq, my best friend, who is also on his way to the carnival. Well, the carnival is not that big but it sure lights up the whole boulevard. There are so many of them, what am I going to choose? I hear some senior students screaming, apparently one of the students is breaking a board with his or her insecurities written on it. Everyone has their insecurities, so it's time to break mine once and for all.
My insecurity is not fitting in and no sense of belonging when it comes to hanging out with a group of friends. I feel left out at times and still do today. After writing my insecurity on the board, Eric comes over to hold the board. Before that, let's some gloves on to ensure safety- preventing the hand from being hurt when punching it, unless you are a martial art expert, you know where are the pressure and force. If you're not, better to put the gloves on for safe keeping.
Let's break that insecurity! I try to break it for the first time but it didn't work out, "C'mon, try harder! Punch it real hard this time!" the seniors encourage me. Thinking of all the times of being left out, something tells me that I should break it, show them that they are messing with the wrong person. Taking a deep breath, I punch the board real hard time to break my insecurity. It broke it into two! A survey is required to fill up after you participated in the activity.
You can't leave the carnival without capturing the moment on a camera right? All that punching and walking made my tummy grumble. My course mates, Mudita, Jaya and Ness walk to the college cafeteria to have lunch before heading to the next class- Media Relations and Public Affairs.

Industry 4.0: Communicating Strategically (17/4/18)
Last week, our Media Relations and Public Affairs lecturer, Ms. Yesu mentioned that we were going to help out at a talk held by the Department of Communication and Liberal Arts (DCLA), it's called- Industry 4.0: Communicating Strategically. All of us got so excited.
The day has finally come. When I step into the first class which is Law and Ethics in Communication, none of them notices my all-pink ensemble but the other girls in the Corporate Communication specialisation are wearing blue, black and white respectively. Am I the only one who didn't "coordinate" their dress code? My fellow batch mate, Zhi Wen, helps me to put on lipstick by Silkygirl to finish up the look.
We are excused from Law and Ethics in Communication class at 9.00am. The venue is just the other side of the classroom, it takes about five minutes to get there. The tables and chairs are set outside of LT 5. My job is the easiest- taking the student's attendance. I'm lucky to handle the attendance of my batch mates who are in PR project management specialisation.
The seniors complement my all-pink ensemble, "Kar Marn, you look so pretty! I like the bows rest on your dress. Absolutely beautiful!" As the time of the talk nears, it's our turn to go in it has already started as scheduled. We have to enter by a back door but there is a flight steps, so it's a challenge for me to get in there. Luckily, I go through the entrance and I sit with one of the speakers, Ms. Kaur. She asked me which course I'm specalising in, "I'm specialising in Corporate Communication," I answer.
Each of the speaker talks about how communication is transforming at a fast pace. From the olden days using pictures as a message to the devices we are using now as a medium of communication. In fact, we are considered as "journalists" as in "moving journalists" because whatever we posted on our social media sites will form an opinion to the public. In other words, we might be a Key Opinion Leaders (KOL) because when an opinion is made, it means a lot to the public. Be careful of our contents when posting online.
After the talk, everyone is served with refreshments and light snacks which had prepared earlier. For us student helpers, we get to have lunch at Gallery View with the speakers and the VIPs! One goal has achieved in my university life- being a student helper at big events like this. I'm looking forward to the next one, hopefully I can work together with the seniors.

St. David High School Carnival 2018 (7/4/18)
It's been almost two years since I last visited my secondary alma mater- SMK Tinggi St. David Melaka or also known as St. David High School Melaka. The last time I visited was during my younger sister's report card day back in 2016. Flash forward to 2018, it's time for me to go back to school to help out. Clad in my St. David Buddhist Society t-shirt, I paired with my trustee Adidas neo shoes and blue jeans.
Once I reached the school gate, a lot of things had changed since I left the school four years ago. The guard house changed from white coating to pink. Along the newspaper reading corner, some book shelves were placed with educational magazine. Even some new murals were added. I had a hard time finding the Buddhist Society stall. Yes, I was a member of the society when I was in Form 4. Luckily, Ms. Leong, the school's counselling teacher, asked one of the juniors to guide me there.
"Hey guys, I'm here!" I greeted the juniors when I reached the stall. "Hey, you're here!" the juniors were happy to see me as their senior was back to help them out, also giving back to the school at the same time. "So what can I do to help?" I asked. Sheng Ren, the president of the Buddhist Society, said: "Each game station costs RM 3.00. If a customer plays at least three types of games is considered a set. They will redeem a prize."
There were four game stations. First was the balloon darts followed by knocking out the cans, words forming and so on. I didn't buy any of the coupons, I just played the game on a test run. The carnival just started not long, rain showers began to pour. Lucky for us, we had tents to keep us dry.
The first batch of seniors I saw was the 94 batch. "It's been six years since I last saw you! How are you? University life treating you well?" asked Adrian, who was the school captain (head prefect) from 2010-2011. I told them that I'm doing well, currently pursuing my major in Corporate Communication in university. "Oh wow! Time flies! The last time we saw you, you were in Form 2!" Yin Sze said.
Not long after, I finally met the kids in my batch. "Hi Kar Marn!" Ben walking over and gave me hug. "Hi Ben! How are you?" I asked. All the kids in my batch were talking about university life and what we were up to these days. The good old days were back when you gathered with your friends at the most anticipated carnival.
While there was no one at the stall, I decided to take a stroll around the school. I was resting at one of the table at the canteen, I bumped into my seniors Megan, Sherwin and Victor! "Katelyn, long time no see! How are you?" Megan greeted me with a hug. "I'm good and how about you guys?" I asked. They are good as well, some of them are graduating from university this year. Tung, another senior of mine, introduced her university mates to me and the other seniors. "Oh yeah, this is my junior, Katelyn!"
We strolled along the school field and met even more juniors and seniors! Even we met up with the Principal, Mr. Chay. As it was starting to heat up, the seniors brought me back to the game station as they were afraid that I would get a sun burn. They promised me they would be back after they were done with food hunting. As the time was nearly, 2.30pm, the number of customers started to subside and most of them already went home to have a good rest. I did have a good chat with my juniors from the 99 batch (the last 90's babies).
In high school, I was just your average high school girl. I'm super happy that I have the chance to come back and support the school. I'm looking forward to the next carnival.

C & S Carnival Cycle 1 2018 (3/4/18-4/4/18)
The C & S (Clubs & Societies) Carnival is back on the road to recruit to new members. I head down to the college boulevard as I'm performing for Sunway University Buddhist Society. I get to know at the last minute as I don't need the first three songs. Just the song that I pick, if we have still enough time, I might have a bonus song for everyone.
At 12.00pm, we head over to the stage for some sound checks for the microphone to make sure everything is in place. Yee Tang, the event director of the society says: "When you are done with your performances, promote our society, okay?" I give a thumbs up. The first two songs are Before Finding the Meaning of Life (在找到生命的意义以前) and Bhrama of My Heart.
It's my turn to take the stage, all eyes are on me when I take my place. I perform a song titled Forgive (原谅) along with sign language. I performed 10 years ago when I was in Year 5 at a teachers' day performance in primary school. 10 years later, I'm bringing it back the feeling. Turns out the students like the performance. As a bonus, I sing The Friends in Life (生命中的朋友). After the performance, I'm back to your ordinary university girl.
We also have a little game as well. It's called "What's in the Box". Don't worry, it's nothing scary! It's just soft toys and some stuff that we use in everyday life such as nail clipper, comb, stapler etc. That's the end of Day 1. It's off to Day 2 and final day of the first cycle of C & S Carnival 2018
Day 2 get a lot more interesting than yesterday's activities. In conjunction with their upcoming third annual Chinese Cultural Night, Sunway University Chinese Cultural Society (SUCCS) promote their event by inviting deejays from Astro's new Mandarin station- Go Xuan! to live up the atmosphere. There are performances as well from last year's SunVoice 2017 top 12 finalists.
I realise that I've been off duty for two hours! Oh no, I'm gonna be in hot water! I rush back to the college boulevard as fast as I can. Luckily, no students visit our booth so that is a sigh of relief! Phew!
I walk up and down along the boulevard just to get my blood circulate, "Kar Marn (袈文)!" I turn around to see my friend, Ming Han, who is from Sunway Chinese Independent School Alumni Club (CISA). He teaches me some new beats of the 24 season drums. Although we can't use the drums, we use the table instead. Some beats I get it right and some are wrong, but I can learn the new beat in no time as long as I practice constantly.

Malaysia National Model United Nations (30/3/18-1/4/18)
Malaysia National Model UN (MNMUN) 2018 was held at APU new campus. I was super excited because this was my first time participating an MUN as a delegate, also representing Sunway Model United Nations (SUNMUN). When we arrived at the venue, I signed myself up and got my name tag for my council. I was in the Cobbold Commission and I played the role of Tun Abdul Razak, the second Prime Minister of Malaysia but at this point he was the Deputy Prime Minister to Tunku Abdul Rahman, the Father of Independence of Malaysia.
As delegates took their seats at the auditorium, the opening ceremony of MNMUN begun. A short video was presented by the IT & Design department to show the councils and introducing our council chairs. When the Secretary Generals of the MNMUN declared the conference had officially begun, delegate started to make a beeline to their respective council and yet I was left out as always. Luckily the admins were here to help me out.
The conference started by going through a roll call. Unfortunately, my "boss" was not around so I took over the place for almost half of the council. I had nothing to say much because my "duty" was to "assist" Tunku Abdul Rahman in the formation of Malaysia. Well I did do some talking, as in "predicting" the future which eased the atmosphere.
On the second day, delegates arrived to continue their debating on their respective topics. We were still in the process of forming Malaysia. This time we were focusing on education. The second day ended with social night with performances of the 24 season drums by students of Taylor's International School, singing and dancing. In honour of the upcoming general election, our history knowledge was put to the test. The question was: When did Malaysia gain independence? That was easy! And I got a Starbucks card as a reward. The Social King and Queen of MNMUN went to Zack and Megan respectively.
On the third and final day, we just need to go to through some amendments before "officially" formed Malaysia. Alas, Malaysia was "officially formed! The national anthem- the Negaraku, was played to mark a new federation. That made me realised that forming a new nation was not easy, we had to go through a few negotiations before everyone agreed on the circumstances. Well, we ended a session early so I decided to drop by at the UN Security Council. Everyone was given a certificate of participation. I was super happy when I received mine.
Since the time of the closing ceremony was delayed, we were allowed to go to other councils. The UN Security Council had a mock press conference, I was interested to join in as I would experience a little later in the semester. We were given the green light to the auditorium to attend the closing ceremony. Future MUN Conferences and highlights of the three-day event were featured in a video. Awards were given out for best delegate, best position paper, most outstanding group delegate.
I'm looking forward to the next Model United Nations, who knows I might end up in the real UN!
