The Star R. AGE Zoom Party with UNICEF Malaysia (14/12/2020)

The final Zoom party of the year with #StandTogether kindness campaign by R. AGE is here! After a week meeting Selangor royalty - Tengku Zatasah, the princess of Selangor and Arwind Kumar, it's the moment that everyone is waiting for meeting the people from UNICEF Malaysia! I'm on my way up from Melaka to Selangor for a short stay, and it's a bumpy ride. "Katelyn, I hope you are not driving," Ian is concerned about my safety, "I'm fine, I'm in the backseat of the car for now," I say.

Dr Rashed - the representative for UNICEF Malaysia, alongside our national ambassador Kak Lisa Surihani and youth advocate Ismail Izzani are on board the party! I'm really star-struck to see Dr Rashed virtually, hopefully, to see him physically in person. What does it take for us to be a kindness leader in big organisations such as UNICEF, Dr Rashed says: "Your kindness and empathy have to empower others," which is true! If we don't take that first step of kindness and empathy, how are we gonna empower the people around us?

I have reached my destination, still attending the Zoom party in the car. As it was mentioned earlier, a bumpy ride along the way, it's hard for me to type the questions out. Luckily, during the second half of the party time, manage to settle down with a proper table and chair. I wanted to ask the questions, unfortunately, it's the end of the party. It's okay, at least got to meet the three important people from UNICEF Malaysia.

"I hope Katelyn is fine because she was in the car all the way," says Kak Lisa before leaving the call, I told her that I'm on a short cuti-cuti Malaysia with my parents and younger sibling for a week in Selangor. "Oh, that's good!" she says. We did ask the R. AGE team on how to get into UNICEF Malaysia's initiatives. "Joining the kindness campaign is part of UNICEF Malaysia's work because they are collaborating with us," says Ian.

Thank you R. AGE team for the final party of the year! I'm going to continue to spread kindness and empathy around me. Hope there is a physical event next year! Kindness leaders, remember to always have courage and be kind.

The Star R. AGE Stand Together Zoom Party with Arwind Kumar and Tengku Zatasah (7/12/2020)

After meeting national gymnast Farah Ann and MMA fighter Ann Osman at my first Zoom party. This time it's with Tengku Zatasah Idris - the Princess of Selangor and Arwind Kumar, better known as Mak Cik Roastmah. Logging into the Zoom party, kindness leaders are taking their places to wait for the party to start. To get in the Christmas season, a red hairband is a perfect accessory to get into the festive season.

When Ian announces the arrival of our first guest - Tengku Zatasah, the kindness leaders are so star struck. It's every girl's dream to meet a real-life princess! Arwind hops on after that and without further ado, let the party begin! As with my first zoom party, a simple breathing exercise is conducted for everyone to relax.

The real fun is playing one of my favourite games is Would You Rather? One part of the question is would you rather seek advice from our friends or parents? This is a tough question. I choose neither because I would always go to my grandparents whenever I needed advice. I would go to my friends, especially my seniors in high school and university, and my peers who would understand the challenges that I'm going through. As for the past and future self, I choose my past because I would tell the Katelyn in the past to not do this and would regret for the rest of her life. If I could, I would tell my three-year-old self is to not let my parents to not proceed with the physiotherapy therapy treatment, it was a nightmare for a couple of years.

Tengku Zatasah shares about her experience while she was studying in the UK, it was a painful experience. It reminds me of the times in high school where I would be left behind during PJ (physical education) in class due to my Cerebral Palsy because the teacher would give me the reason that they didn't want to be responsible if anything happens to me. Can we just include all students no matter they are disabled or not? We need more empathy and kindness, be more inclusive.

Arwind also shares his experiences on how did the MCR impersonation come up, it did receive a lot of backlashes but slowly people are accepting as it progresses, some might not. Not all people can accept when we want to come up with something. During my first year in university, I wanted to raise awareness of mental health among my course mates but I ended up in the wrong place. Luckily, I have Model United Nations (MUN) acts as a platform to voice out the causes I'm championing.

During the Q & A session, I ask Tengku Zatasah and Arwind how they use their popularity to spread kindness and empathy around them? They said we don't need a title or being popular to spread kindness and empathy, we could do it by starting from ourselves, people will tend to follow after that if we take that baby step. A group photo is taken at the end of the party. Thank you #StandTogether team for organising and can't wait for the next and final #StandTogether Zoom party.

What would you do to spread kindness and empathy around you?

SUNMUN 2020 (27/11/2020-29/11/2020)

SUNMUN 2020 is back! Online that is, it was supposed to be held in July. Due to the current pandemic that the world is facing right now, the conference is shifted online as with previous MUN conferences I had attended. I was supposed to be placed in the Dewan Rakyat - which is one of my favourite councils but due to low participation of delegates, the council is called off. I look for other councils in the list, I decide to try out the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) for short. Please, do not be confused with the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC).

We have an ice-breaking session and later Elisa, our co-chair explains the procedure of MUN in general for the newcomers to be familiar with, we don't want to have any culture shocks. I remembered during my very first MUN in 2018 at Malaysia National Model United Nations (MUN), I have to find my way during the three-day conferences. No guidance at all, but slowly was working the way during my second conference which was SUNMUN 2018.

The debate begins on the second day with opening speeches and discussing on the topic in hand. I have a chat with Elisa, the co-chair of the council during the break to catch up we have been up to these days. The delegate of Canada decides to team up with delegates of Malaysia, New Zealand, Ireland for a bloc on drafting a working paper that would be presented later for a draft resolution. As I'm in a meeting for an upcoming SunFM podcast, the delegate of Canada and Ireland message me, and I didn't know what is going on. It's a bit of drama but it is all in good terms. If this was in a physical MUN, the drama would be even intense.

On the third and final day of the conference, I didn't join the first half of the conference as I'm on my weekly Sunday class. By the time I come back, the resolution is passed and we end a session early. While waiting for the online closing ceremony, the delegates mingle around and drop our respective social media handles in the chatbox for us to keep in touch. Although, no award for me on home grounds, this a way to close the final online MUN conference in 2020. Hopefully, next year in 2021, a physical MUN conference.

The Star R. AGE Kindness Workshop (3/11/2020)

After a Zoom party with national gymnast Farah Ann and MMA fighter Ann Osman, it's time to head over for a kindness workshop and there is a special guest appearance, who is it? Let you know in a bit. It's back to the #StandTogether Kindness Workshop! Unfortunately, my computer is not kind to me today because the camera is not working but luckily my iPad is there as a backup.

We are asked to take four pieces of A4 papers which will be used for each segment of the workshop. The first segment is drawing ourselves, the challenge is we have to use our non-dominant hand, dominant hand and one part with our eyes closed while drawing ourselves. I didn't do well with my eyes closed while drawing. Next, we are broken into groups to breakout rooms. My first group is a bit quiet because none of us spoke up, I have to be the first one to initiate the conversation, it lasted for five minutes, it's really short.

We are back to the main room again for another activity. I participated in this game before at the Zoom party. We are given a statement while the cameras are turned off, and turn on if that statement describes us. Again, we are broken out into another breakout room to discuss the forms of bullying and which form of bullying is the most common of all. My teammates Emily, Khadijah and Mellisa agree that cyberbullying is the most common of all because we can get behind the computer to type out anything, but please don't, use it to spread kindness.

Next, we take a third A4 paper and tear it half. One is to draw which represents "Me Also" meaning "I have been through this before", the other paper is a heart shape which represents "Love La!" meaning "You are brave" and other empathy words within. It's like social media "likes". We use it for the Storytelling and Gratitude segments. By the time we head back to the main room, Chole is telling how much she enjoys the Kindness Workshop, everyone's hearts just melted in an instant. The innocence of a child teaches us so much about empathy and kindness.

Remember I told you about the special guest appearance? He's a #StandTogether ambassador and UNICEF Malaysia's youth ambassador, can you guess who is it! Yes! The one and only Ismail Izzani! He shared his experiences about kindness in his life, especially his English teacher, Teacher Gina, who constantly believed in him. That reminded me of some of my teachers in high school as well.

There is a Q & A session from the kindness advocates. Being a singer, Ismail sang a few lines of Bidadari (Angel) for us. At the end of the workshop, a group photo is taken and that wraps up the English version of the kindness workshop. Now, I'm officially a kindness advocate! Thank you #StandTogether team for organising the workshop and made some amazing friends too!

Have courage and be kind.

The Star Rage Stand Together Zoom Party (27/10/2020)

#StandTogether Kindness Leader zoom party with Malaysia national gymnast Farah Ann and MMA fighter Ann Osman

The #StandTogether campaign organised by Star R. AGE is back for its third consecutive year. Traditionally, it was supposed to be held in the first week of April as with previous years, it also is known as national kindness week. But then the covid-19 pandemic came and everything was put on hold.

During the first week of April, we did ask to send in some photos to share some of our kindness stories during the Movement Control Order (MCO) period. I did send a picture of my grandma holding an iPad reading The Star online mobile app because at that time our newspaper delivery person told us no newspapers will be sent to us for eight days, for her to keep up with the news I have to teach her on how to use the mobile app of The Star

Five months later, #StandTogether is back on full swing! This time is conducted virtually. As always, we were given a challenge each day to perform an act of kindness. The first day was easy - being kind to ourselves, and the second day was showing gratitude to our family and friends.

The third day, it got a little tricky because it was supporting a local business. I thought of the pau shop that my aunt always goes to buy my favourite char siew pau and lau sar pau. The fourth day is being kind to our frontline heroes! I have friends who are working as front liners, I dropped them a message to say thank you for keeping us safe amid the pandemic. The last day is giving a compliment to someone by spreading kindness online.

That's not all! They have a series of virtual workshops for students and teachers to join in the kindness revolution across Malaysia. There is a Google classroom too for students to take part in, unfortunately, I'm over the age limit, but it's okay, more kindness events are on the way one of them is a Zoom party. Today's Zoom party we are honoured to invite our national athletes - gymnast Farah Ann and MMA fighter Ann Osman.

I was star struck when I see Farah Ann on the computer screen because she is my hero. I met her once on campus three years ago when we had a homecoming ceremony for the students and alumni of Sunway University College, who represented the country at the SEA Games in 2017. Both ladies share the experiences they faced in schools and in the sports world, especially when it comes to online, there is so much negativity and how they overcome it with kindness and empathy.

Kindness and empathy - are the two traits, which most of us find them to difficult to put into practice in our daily lives. It's all about taking a huge step with courage. As a Kindness Leader, I hope that we could create a kinder society in Malaysia to see the goodness and magic. Like I always use this as my life quote: Have courage and be kind. Looking forward to the next kindness revolution.

UNAM Youth Assembly Conferece: iGem Mini Youth MUN 2020 (21/10/2020-22/10/2020)

After one and a half months of hiatus, it's time to head back to the Youth Assembly organised by United Nations Association Malaysia, also known as UNAM youth. I was browsing through my Instagram account and it popped out of nowhere that there was another UNAM Youth Assembly, this time to include sustainability education into the Malaysian education system. I was filling up the form, I didn't realise it was two days from the conference. It was a last-minute sign-up.

How am I going to prepare a position paper in two days, I thought. Usually, position papers in normal MUN conferences, we would take weeks to get it done and hand them to our respective chairs. I quickly messaged Tuck and Ernest - they are the chairs for the conferences, on submitting the position papers, and to my relief, we didn't need to hand in one because it was a mini-conference.

On the day of the conference, it's really a mini one, with only three delegates - Rueben, Roshen and me. For everyone's benefit, we went through the rules of procedures on how the youth assembly would run. In this case, we were representing ourselves as youths, how are we going to convince the "big people" to implement sustainability education into the Malaysian education system. It was firing in the beginning, until the end, we were starting to slow down as we were running out of topic during the General Speakers List (GSL). Our chair, Tuck, gave us the remaining hours of the council to write a resolution.

The second day, things got a little better because we have our second chair, Ernest, also known as Sherlock, came in as a delegate, alongside Sarah, that did spice up the council for a while. When Tuck asked about delegate to put in the GSL, I decided to step back and let the newcomers - Rueben and Roshen to hop on. We did have a little "controversial topic" in council which really got us into full debate mode, but the rest of the session was really chill. This is the most chill youth assembly I have been to yet compared to the first one on the status of Rohingya Refugees in Malaysia which was a little intense.

Finally, we got into voting on the draft resolution as a whole. Roshen and I spoke for it while Ernest and Sandra spoke against. In the end, we passed the resolution! I amended a couple of clauses in the draft resolution, which was a first. Usually, I would just comment on the resolution. I did send an amendment once but it failed. Throughout this two-day conference, I learned a lot on climate change and environmental sustainability. I have to admit that I'm not an outdoor person to appreciate Mother Nature, hopefully, after the pandemic is over, we could go out to feel the grass and dirt like how we used to and plan a new seed to brand new dawn.

I'm happy to be back on board to help out newcomers. Thank you, Ernest (Sherlock) and Tuck for guiding us, looking forward to the next youth assembly.

World Mental Health Day 2020 (10/10/2020)

Hi, it's been a while since the last post was written. How are you guys feeling? I hope everyone is staying safe and healthy during the pandemic.

I'm going to talk about a passion that I have been championing which is mental health. Now, the first question is: Who inspired me to be passionate about mental health? They are Britain's TRH The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge - Prince William and Kate Middleton, they and the Duke of Sussex - Prince Harry set up a mental health campaign called Heads Together. The Duchess of Cambridge is the brainchild of the campaign.

My curiosity on mental health was during my freshmen year in college when I heard a couple of suicidal attempts. It was a "culture shock" for me. I didn't bother about that much on mental health. A year later, I was browsing through the online HELLO! magazine, a headline caught my attention on The Duke and Duchess Cambridge and Prince Harry started the Heads Together campaign, I clicked on to the article to read about the new project, that made me learn about more about mental health.

In 2017, my passion for mental health started to grow. I realised that raising awareness is to pick the right place to speak about and who we are talking to. My university course mates thought I was having a mental health issue that I ended up at the Head of Department's office for questioning. I still remembered it was a week before the final examination of the very first semester in university. I was thinking "Oh gosh, what did I do wrong?" In the end, I decided to put that behind me and continue to champion the cause of mental health on my own.

2018 was an important year for me because it was the year I turned 21 - the road to adulthood. I promised myself to champion mental health before that big milestone in November. If I want to voice out, where should I go? Model United Nations (MUN) came into mind and off I went! I was happy that I have a voice out my passion for mental health. Thanks to that, I could speak openly without anyone's judgements.

Looking back now, I'm still going to champion mental health, especially in children because it is important to start them young on the importance on mental health, how could we identify the symptoms of any mental health problems. It's okay to say! If I can normalise mental health, you can too! Let's break the stigma of mental health once and for all!

MONMUN 2020 (28/8/2020-30/8/2020)

It's back to Dewan Rakyat, this time let us set back the time into the late 1990s when the Asian financial crisis affected Malaysia. Yes, it was back in 1997 (that was the year I was born. Oops, my age is revealed!). Anyway, I'm in the Gagasan Rakyat party coalition, playing DAP veteran - YB Tan Seng Giaw, the MP of Kepong.

As with any Dewan Rakyat councils I have been to, this Dewan Rakyat council is special because it connects with the Asian Financial Crisis in 1997 till 1998, it's a crisis council! Throughout my experiences as a MUN-er, the crisis councils are always major favourites among delegates. It's always packed up in physical conferences. I asked my fellow delegates why crisis councils are always the favourite? They said: "Because there is always drama!" I could imagine how intense and full of drama the council would be.

First time for everything! Each MP receives their personal profile to achieve three objectives: primary, secondary, and secret. Besides that, there is a brief on the MPs' characters. In fact, a few days before the council, one of the MPs texted me on a strategic move in council. I'm speechless because this is my first time in a crisis council throughout my MUN career. The key is trust in crisis councils.

Even before the council starts, we have to face a fictional death scene, in this case, the MP of Permatang Pauh takes over the place as the Prime Minister of Malaysia. For the sake of Malaysians, we put our political differences aside and start to draft a model bill.

The MP of Sg. Siput is really passionate on riverbanks and astronomy, how can we focus on these two when we have a financial crisis to handle? Things get heating up when MPs from both sides start to tear each other apart until the Kak Long Speaker has to calm the situation, while I'm having fun to listen to both sides of MPs arguing at each other, just like the real Dewan Rakyat.

One point, the BN government blames the Opposition party for not contributing to the writing of the model bill. I quickly switch on my microphone to clarify that the Opposition did contribute to Bill. "Yes, YB Kepong, we appreciate your efforts. What about your fellow Opposition MPs, did they contribute?" the PM asks. My answer is I will do the best to convince my fellow Opposition MPs to be proactive in the council.

The drama continues with the YB Sg. Siput being put into "jail" which we called the matahari. Not long after, YB Pekan is put into the matahari, and he was sacked by the PM, switching the role of independent as Ambassador Pekan for USSR. There is a "love story" written by some of the MPs, luckily the Kak Long Speaker bans it. Phew!

It is more exciting when we are running for a virtual "election". Of course, we have to draft an "election manifesto". When we will know the results of our virtual "election"? That will be revealed during the closing ceremony. In the meantime, we are voting the bill as a whole and we passed the model bill. During the closing ceremony, awards are given out to delegates in each council. When it comes to our Historical Dewan Rakyat, the "polls" are revealed. Eventually, for my character, 11% of the votes which is okay. But here's the plot twist, none of us did win the virtual "election", YAB Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin comes out nowhere! In real life, he is our current and eighth Prime Minister.

It's my first ever crisis council in my MUN career, first time ever facing a fictional death, first time ever running a virtual "election". Three firsts in historical crisis council.

This is Kar Marn, representing YB Tan Seng Giaw, MP of Kepong (Gagasan Rakyat) from Historical Dewan Rakyat Council (HDRC) signing off. Tomorrow is Malaysia's 63rd Independence Day, wishing all Malaysians Selamat Hari Kebangasaan

Taylor Lakeside MUN 2020 (14/8/2020-16/8/2020)

With two international MUN during the last two months, it's time to head back to the Malaysian MUN scene. I'm playing YB Hannah Yeoh, MP of Segambut in the Dewan Rakyat council. Hours before the council, the delegates who are playing PH MPs have a quick meeting on Discord to strategise our plan on keeping the Perikatan Nasional (PN) in check, that is our role as the Opposition Party.

Our Deputy Tuan Speaker explains how the Dewan Rakyat work as a whole and have to imagine that we are in the real Dewan Rakyat, even though it is online. At 3.30pm, the opening ceremony begins.YB Syed Syaddiq, the MP of Muar is one of the guest speakers. He emphasises that us youths are leaders of today, we can practice our rights as young Malaysians. One of them is registering as a voter for the next general election, we can also get in connection with an NGO on the topics we are passionate in.

It's time for Dewan Rakyat showdown! Some of the MPs go overboard by "insulting" the delegate who is playing MP of Langkawi, Tun Dr Mahatir. To keep peace in council, my character as MP of Segambut request the Deputy Speaker for the MPs to "retract" (tarik balik) their statements. One point, I got "fired" as well, but that's how Dewan Rakyat works.

The remaining half an hour of the council, MPs are broken into two voice rooms to discuss on their respective stances. On the second day, the debate continues and it's getting more dramatic than ever! There is some drama between the MP of Semporna and MP of Keningau on the opposition's group chat. We did our best to back up MP of Keningau but it didn't work out. I did the best by playing the peacemaker while keeping in character to let the drama cool off. At the end of the second day, the first model bill which is the RUU 355 "passed" in the House.

To bring out our best form, the opposition party, Pakatan Harapan (PH) MPs had a late-night meeting on how to "attack" our PN counterparts. Having done Dewan Rakyat council at SUNMUN 2019, the MPs are reminded to keep in character at all times and don't need to oppose everything on the government side. As mentioned earlier, the role of the Opposition is to keep the government in check.  Although I'm worn out, as an MP, got to serve the role for Malaysians.

The third and final day is going into the Economic Stimulus Package (ESP). At the beginning of the council, every MP requires to speak on the bill as a whole regardless of government or Opposition. At one point, my character is accused by MP Langkawi of not following the Constitution. No matter in power or Opposition, each and every MP knows well about the Constitution. The third principle of the Rukun Negara: Keluruhan Perlembagaan (Supremacy of the Constitution). The MP of Kota Bahru comes into defending me, stating that each MP has their own personal causes.

The debate continues, and we manage to pass the second bill which is a first in this virtual Dewan Rakyat council. It is an honour to serve as an MP in TLMUN 2020, Hope we could get back into the physical MUN where all the real actions happen. I want to thank my Kak Long Speaker, Amirah and Deputy Speaker, Akshel, for leading the virtual Dewan Rakyat. A big shoutout to all the MPs, especially my Pakatan Harapan MPs!

Congratulations to Chris, Ke Wen and the TLMUN 2020 team!

This is Kar Marn, representing YB Hannah Yeoh, MP of Segambut (PH) from Dewan Rakyat signing off!

MUN Reunion: Melaka Day Out (7/8/2020)

It's been a long 11 months since I saw my MUN buddies. Due to the current Covid-19 pandemic, we were stuck at home for almost three months since the implementation of the Movement Control Order (MCO) on 18 March 2020. Now it is Recovery MCO (RMCO), we can get out of the house and have a cuti-cuti Malaysia, be it in our hometowns or travelling domestically. For Katelyn, it's a surprise visit from her MUN friends who are on a day trip to Melaka.

Initially, I want to join them for lunch at the famous chicken rice ball shop along Jonker Street but lunch is served, you guess it, it's chicken rice too! After lunch, it's time to head to The Daily Fix for some afternoon tea. There is traffic congestion along the way, but manage to get there just in time. As I'm about to reach the cafe, I give Caylene a call. After my folks dropped me off, Caylene takes me inside, but before that, we have to fill up our names and contact number in adhering the SOPs.

"Emily, Ke Wen, Gro Wen and Chris are inside," Caylene leads us to our seating spot. After settling down, I ordered a cup of iced chocolate to ward off the intense Melaka heat and take a bite of the leftover fries. We take a picture of the cafe's iconic plate decorations which have some Baba Nyonya elements. We head to Sun May Hiong Satay House to meet Chia Yong.

When we have a table full of MUN-ers, MUN is not far away from our thoughts. In between, I lost count how many satay sticks I have eaten but it doesn't matter because satay is an all-time Malaysian favourite. We head for the second round of afternoon tea, unfortunately, one of the cafes is about to close as it is neared closing time, so we head to One Zo for milk tea.

We can't simply end the day with Nyonya food right? We made a reservation dinner at Aunty Lee. Emily and I actually go crazy on the chap chye because, in The Little Nyonya, there is an iconic scene which featured the dish. Besides that, we also have pai tee (top hat) as an appetiser, ikan lemak nenas and fried chicken as the main course. We want to have cendol as a dessert but our tummies are super happy as we have been food hunting the whole day. There is always a next time.

Looking forward to more day out like this, hopefully, we will do the same in KL as well!

20 July 2020

Final Day of Year 3 (20/7/2020)

I submit the final report, this marks the end of my university life. This semester has been challenging for all of us as we are stuck in the comfort of our homes due to the COVID-19 pandemic that is happening around the world. Before e-learning took place, the thought of e-learning is staying at home, we don't have to get up early to get ready for going to campus. It's similar to working from home. When the reality of e-learning came in this nightmare, it was harder than we thought.

First and foremost, distractions from family members. Even though we have set up the time to remind family members that we are attending "university" from home, they just walked in casually into the room which sometimes annoyed us all, especially when sharing a room. During the first day, it's quite alright but on the second day it's just walking into the room, which can cause a lot of "chaos".

Secondly, the internet connection. Let's just face that technology really helped us a lot thanks to the Internet. Not all of us are lucky to have strong internet connections at home which led to some technical issues. If we are listening something important "in class", the internet connection cut off in the middle of the class and that would take some time to get the connection back.

Thirdly, turning on web-camera or webcams. One of the reasons that our lecturers encouraged us to turn on the web-cams so they could see our facial expressions and body languages. Not all of us are comfortable turning on our web-cams "in class", as we could feel thousands of eyes are staring at us. Some students preferred to have their webcams turned off because the teaching content is more important.

Fourthly, the absence of face-to-face learning. Although we were "in class", we couldn't sit next to our friends like we used to and talked before the lecturer comes in, instead, our computer screens replaced the physical presence. The Ministry of Higher Education Malaysia made the announcement that full face-to-face learning will be resumed in October. In July, campuses were opened as an early phase for students to come back to have access the facilities on campuses. That's all the challenges that were faced during online classes, gladly it's all over for now.

Although I couldn't meet my course mates physically, we still keep in touch through social media. I'm lucky to have them in my university life. I bet you wanna know more about them right? I'll tell you one by one. First off it's my best friend, Pamela, I call her Pam for short. We bonded over a hand-made pebble ring during our short semesters in January 2018. As they always diamonds are girls' best friend, clearly the bling did the bring us close together! She is the best big sister that I could ever ask for! She is my rock both physically and mentally.

Next up, another best friend of mine is Shree, I met her through Pam too. She has been my confidante throughout the semester, especially on the mental side of it because the final semester is always the toughest and the most challenging for any final year student. My mental health took a toll on me a couple of times, so we talked it out about the struggles we faced.

Need someone to cheer up? We have Raphael and Co! I'm talking about Aloysius, Ben Kin, Chester, Desmond, Raphael, Shaun and Nasrin. They sure put a smile on everyone's face. At some point in conversations, I have no idea what was going on, they sure shine a light in my university life.  What's university life without any music and fashion? Carlson and Jinson are the people we are looking for! Fashion-wise, take a tip or two from Yuki, she always amazes me with her fashion, alongside with her PowerPuff Girls - Dayana and Shivani.

We can't reset the clock, but I wish we could to put everything at a stop and enjoy the moment for that one bit, but surely we can go beyond labels to achieve our dreams. The journey is almost coming to an end, hopefully, we will meet each other again sometime in the near future.

Comfort MUN 2020 (11/7/2020-12/7/2020)

After the first virtual international Model United Nations (MUN) at Momentum MUN, it's time to get comfortable for Comfort MUN 2020! What's more, I'm in the UNICEF council again, this time representing the Republic of Korea (ROK) with the topic on "Combatting Child Trafficking". I'm surprised at the statistics when I did my research on the country I'm delegating.

As with the previous international MUN, the conference takes place in the comfort of our homes. A day before the council, my fellow delegates are really spicing up the topic. I want to talk more in the group chat but I'll save for the debate later on.

I wanted to raise my topic on combatting child sex tourism, unfortunately, the other delegates are debating their topics instead so I might save it later. During the unmoderated caucus, I didn't have the chance to speak but the delegate of the United Kingdom is kind enough to notify since I was in line for so long. We have delegate social, where delegates from Comfort MUN get to know each other. We played a game of "matchmaking" which is another version of "Who'd You Rather?".

I didn't join the midnight crisis as "energy" need to be restored, so I use the time to discuss the draft resolution with my fellow delegates. The second day of the council is firing up, which kind of made me wonder are we in a crisis council or a child-friendly council who we gather to fight for every child? To wrap things up, we want to merge our draft solutions as one but it didn't work out. In the end, the draft resolution that I worked with my fellow delegates failed, the other bloc passes.

During the closing ceremony, we have a special guest, Mr Noah from the United Nations Associaton of Kenya. This time no award for me but being able to represent Malaysia at my second international MUN is the biggest honour of all!

An award or not, it doesn't matter but the best award is that I get to play my role as a UNICEF ambassador in the council. I will continue to fight for every child. This is Kar Marn representing South Korea from UNICEF, signing off!

International MUN: Momentum MUN 2020 (24/6/2020-25/6/2020)

After being in the Malaysian MUN for quite some time, I decided to shift my delegation at an international MUN - can you keep up with the momentum at Momentum MUN? For everyone who is representing our country, we have a duty to put the name of our country on the map at international events. As this is my first time representing Malaysia, the duty is on me. This marked my 10th conference in my MUN career - a special milestone.

The sign up for Momentum MUN was last-minute, I didn't have enough time to prepare the topic for my council- ECOSOC, delegating as Argentina. In my mind, the main goal was to make Malaysia proud and fly the flag and go with the flow along the way. After I came back from university online class, I head to google meet to have a chat with fellow delegates from the Philippines, India and the host - Indonesia. Delegates were asked to log on to Zoom to have a small ice-breaking session before heading to serious business.

Usually, after my speech, if I have extra time, I will yield my time back to the chair; also another reason is I don't want to get tongue-tied in council. But the chairs insisted, I should take a POI (Point of Information), although I was reluctant, I couldn't let Malaysia down as I was the sole bearer in the council. Keeping calm, I took the question from the delegate of South Africa. I left an hour early on the first day but my fellow delegates kept me up with the latest development on the draft resolution.

On the second day, the delegates decided to form a big bloc since we all shared the same views. At one point, the delegate of Germany got a little emotional on his speech. The good news was we passed our resolution! Since we were an hour away from the virtual closing ceremony, we had an entertainment session.

There was a confession page for our council, the chairs read out our confession. when my message was read, there was a little misunderstanding of the language as Malaysia and Indonesia share almost the same national language which is Bahasa Melayu. The delegate of South Africa graced with an amazing singing voice! The delegate of Japan set up a Skribble game, our drawing was put to the test. Not an artistic person myself, honestly.

I didn't go to the virtual closing ceremony, as I had a university event to attend so I gotta prepared for that. I received the news that I got a verbal mention, making the country proud! Nonetheless, I'm proud to represent Malaysia at Momentum MUN and hope to represent the country at future international MUN, bringing the Malaysia Boleh spirit.

A big thank you to the Momentum MUN team!

Star R. AGE: Empathy Journalism (18/6/2020)

Empathy- what does it mean to you? Empathy is showing kindness to others, put ourselves in their shoes and think if I were them, how would I feel? What is the feeling? Empathy can be in any form, but have you ever wonder that empathy and journalism work together? I thought about it: How can we apply empathy when we are writing a story for the newspaper? Well, stick around to find out! There are five key elements when we combine empathy and journalism.

First and foremost, read a fiction book or novel. Yes, reading takes us to a place of wonders as we immerse ourselves into the story plot but have we wonder that reading will help us to develop empathy? What if the characters in the story, find something difficult to break the code? If we were the characters in the book, how do we feel? That's when empathy comes in.

Secondly, active listening. When we are in conversations, we are often being talked over or cut off in mid-sentence. Try this way: Listen carefully to the person who is talking, we'll find somehow that he or she is going through a tough time. Always be attentive, don't be distracted, not talking about yourself and most importantly, please don't stare at the phone! We are all on our phones every now and then, if we are willing to put down our phones and pay full attention, empathy comes in.

Thirdly, be curious. There is a saying goes "curiosity kills the cat". In this case for empathy, don't be afraid. Just because we are different in our own way, that doesn't mean we have to hide in a corner from getting us into trouble right? We can show empathy by writing a story on a person based on their story in their perspectives and point of view.

Fourthly, identify biases. Let's be honest, that bias is human nature. Showing empathy is not about taking sides. How do we reduce biases? By identifying and reducing them actively.

Last but not least is practice kindness! Be there and comfort them. The simple way is sitting beside without saying a word, our presence will give the person some comfort. Personally, this is my favourite key element.

There you go, the five key elements of showing empathy. A little game for the Zoom participants. When one of the questions pops up "I am the oldest child in the family," that gets me excited, cause being the oldest, we are looked up by the younger siblings. We have a short sharing session on showing empathy to others and others have shown empathy to us.

Before the seminar ends, we have an "assignment" which we need to complete by next week. It's based on the key elements that we have learned today. I'm sure the tasks can be done in no time! I'm looking forward to the next event.

Have courage and be kind. Stand Together!

The Surprise Comeback: UNAM Youth Assembly Conference (13/6/2020-14/6/2020)

On 8 September 2019, I marked my final journey in the Model United Nations (MUN) scene and went into "retirement" to focus on my university studies. The first question you might ask "Are you completely cut off from the Malaysian UN scene?" My answer was no, I would be involved in UN-related activities but coming back to the scene, it was a mystery.

Due to the coronavirus, the mass gatherings are strictly a no-no, everything is taken online. Delegates, may I present to you the Youth Assembly Conference (YCA) organised by United Nations Association Malaysia (UNAM) Youth! A week before the event, we had a pre-conference online workshop. Fresh out of retirement after nine months, some of the details need to be refreshed especially on the consultation of the whole.

The day of the conference has come, I log on to the Discord app to attend the very first virtual MUN of the year. We have a keynote opening speech, from the UNAM Youth president, Rehan. Delegates have to "move" to "meeting room 1" for the conference. In the physical MUN, we are usually assigned to a country that we are representing, make an opening speech and state on the country's policies, what can delegates hope for the outcome at the end of the conference.

Similarly to physical MUN, but this time we are representing ourselves as Malaysia's youths on how can we help the Rohingya refugees despite facing the COVID-19 pandemic. We focus on issues such as education, work permits, healthcare etc. I work alongside newcomers on the MUN scene, and some of them ask me what advice I could give to newcomers? I don't have much to give but all I could say is observe and listen to what other delegates might present during the debate, if we have a strong point, fight it back diplomatically.

At the end of the first day, we created a group to discuss further on the topic. The second and final day, we spent an hour on how to make our points stronger. The debate is firing up with more passion as compared to the first day. I bring up a motion on "Xenophobic behaviour towards refugees in Malaysia" but it failed. Never mind, we have other topics to discuss on. We "failed" the model resolution.

UNAM Youth is honoured to invite to Mr John and Mr Islam on their views on the Rohingya refugees, as well as from our UNAM Youth president himself, Rehan. We end the day by playing a game on Jackbox TV, but I preferred Kahoot! Although this virtual MUN is amazing, I'm hoping to come back to the physical Model United Nations anytime soon when this pandemic is over.

This is Kar Marn, delegate of Youth Assembly, signing off!

Opinion: Quote- Have Fun and Be Yourself

"Be yourself"- this is the phrase that everyone says to us no matter is meeting a new friend, being in a group of friends, especially going out for the first date. We want the other person to know more about us, the real question is: Are we really being ourselves and having fun? If the answer is yes, congratulations! If the answer is no, take all the time you need, I'm sure the answer will lie in between.

Is it hard to be yourself? It depends on the individual to define the phrase in their own way. Let me tell you a story on the experiences of  "be yourself" which lead up in both good and bad ways. I was a 19-year-old college student, trying to figure out which group of friends I belonged to. On 11 Jan 2016, the second semester of college was resumed, I was excited I couldn't wait to meet all of my course mates again, after a long two-month break.

We headed to a cafe where it is opposite the college, we had a great time. I thought I fit into this group of friends. I did the best I can to create opportunities to bump into them, getting know their timetable so I could fit our time together to hang out. The time I hung out with them, I felt a sense  of uneasiness inside me. Sometimes, I got talked over, which was not a good feeling. I was the one who was always observing how they acted and talked, which I think is a good thing from a bystander's point of view.

In April 2016, their "leader" of the group told me that I don't belong in their group, and having me was a "waste of time". I was heartbroken, these so-called "friends" excluded me socially just like that! I realised that they were not able to accept for who I am as a person, and expected to act in the same way as them. This is not "be yourself, have fun" at all! Why we want to have fun and change the way that we are not ourselves? Something tells me that it's time to leave them for good!

It took me a while to recover this friendship heartbreak. Everything happens for a reason. The healing continued, somehow it led me to reunite with my high school senior and met some amazing friends during an event of Sunway University Buddhist Society (SBS). Immediately, I didn't feel left out and the feeling of "have fun, be yourself" was coming back! I knew that there is always someone in our lives, can accept for who we are without changing ourselves just to fit in. I'm thankful for them to appear in my life at the right time when I was at the lowest point in college.

University began for me in 2017, a new milestone had reached and a new mission. Again, I didn't fit into any of group of friends, except when it comes to academic purposes, otherwise, I'm always alone but I'm lucky to have my seniors and a few best friends in the course who always look out for me.

Along the way, I have been criticised for my personality and being outcasted. This is not going to stop me from having fun and being myself - the girl I always meant to be! Always remember to have fun and be yourself, it is ourselves to make others to see the other side of us and not others who try to change for who we are not.

Opinion: Phantom of the Opera 25th Anniversary Review

Countries all over the world are implementing lockdown and movement control orders since the outbreak of Covid-19. I first got to know the Phantom of the Opera when I was flipping through my Form 3 English textbook. Although the English literature component was changed when I started secondary school in 2010, I didn't have the chance to study.

In 2015, I watched Phantom of the Opera on West End at Her Majesty Theatre during my first ever trip to England. Ever since I fell in love with Phantom of the Opera! Almost five years later, the classic was back again! Last week, we got to relive the classic during its 25th anniversary on YouTube with a time limit of 24 hours in the UK and 48 hours across the globe, and it was streaming for free!

I was feeling stressed due to a final project I'm currently doing in conjunction with my final semester in university. To destress from the studies, time to kick off my weekend to watch the 25th anniversary of Phantom of the Opera. It was late at night, I was done with watching the news. I opened up my iPad and started to watch 25th anniversary of Phantom of the Opera.

I was mesmerised by Raoul (played by Hadley Fraser) on the balcony scene, where he recognised his childhood playmate, Christine Daae (played by Sierra Boggess) in "Think of Me". The two were reunited at Christine's dressing room. Insisted to take her to dinner, Raoul went to fetch his hat and next thing we knew was the jealously of the Phantom (played Ramin Karimloo), slowly luring Christine through the mirror.

The chills came in when the theme song of the show kicked in, I was totally being transported by the fantasy of the Phantom bringing Christine to his lair where it was under the basement of the Opera House. Another favourite part of mine was the scene of "The Music of Night," when Christine saw a vision of herself in a wedding dress, fainted in shock. Although it didn't show it, the Phantom sorted of cast a spell on her and put her to sleep.

Besides, another favourite part of Act I was Christine and Raoul on a rooftop of the Opera House. Raoul couldn't give much but he would love Christine with all his heart. Back then, love was so simple yet pure. I may not be romantic, but I believe love will win in every other way.

Act II, the timeline was fast-forwarded to six months. A masquerade party was held at the Opera House, Christine and Raoul are secretly engaged. The Phantom crashed the party as the Red Devil, he wrote the final score of the next play. The big red costume, my mind was blown! How could they design a costume like that?

In the first half of "The Point of Return", Christine's acting partner was switched, and she felt something amiss when the Phantom slid in. Revealing his true form to the audience, it was down with the lair, this time Christine was forced to wear the wedding dress. Raoul came to the lair to save Christine, but the Phantom captured him with his Punjab lasso. Not afraid by his looks, Christine asked the Phantom what was the reason he lived.

Christine kissed the Phantom showing kindness for the first time. Having experienced kindness first time in his life, the Phantom released Christine and Raoul. The Phantom realised that love couldn't be forced even though we loved someone, that didn't mean the person will reciprocate their love. A tearful Christine returned the ring to the Phantom. The devastated Phantom sits on the throne with a black cloak covering him and magically disappeared. Meg was the first one to arrive at the lair, only to find his mask on the throne, and stared in wonder when the light shone on the stage as the finale.

To commemorate the 25th anniversary of Phantom of the Opera, a bonus performance of the theme song featuring the original Christine (Sarah Brightman) from the very first show in 1986, featuring past and present Phantoms. My favourite Christine and Phantom pairing are definitely Sierra Boggess and Ramin Karimloo. Looking forward to more performances from them.

Stay home and stay safe everyone! Thank you for "The Shows Must Go On" for giving us the arts during this challenging time.

Back to University: Online Lecture (8/4/2020)

It's back to university! What am I going to do? I'm back in my hometown. I'm going to university online. It's true! All the classes for this semester will assessed online, which means university from home. Due to the outbreak of Covid-19 in the country, we are on the second phase of the movement control order (MCO), we're staying put until the order is over.

I'm all set for the semester cause I'll be here in my hometown, Melaka. Usually I will pack food from home and bring it to campus but this time I have home cooked food. Talk about going to classrooms, I have to wait to be at the lift by half an hour before class starts, cause by 15 minutes before class, everybody will be lining up and it will get squishy. At home, I set my alarm clock, have some breakfast and set up the computer an hour class, I'm good to go. It's advisable to wake three or two hours before class time, so we have enough time to buffer and get everything done.

Recently, during the MCO period I was hooking up to games which I left off. Now that university has already started, it's the best to put a timer to time ourselves for not going overboard on the games. Do not miss any class no matter virtually or face-to-face and always be on time! It's a good practice, when we go to the working world punctuality is everything unless we have a leeway in between.

Another tip on university from home is make sure the room that we are in is noise free, good connection of the Internet (sometimes we will face bad connection), a big study space to put all the university go-to "essentials" such as books, laptop, pencil box, phone, iPad etc. Most importantly make ourselves presentable, some lecturers want to see our faces, be confident and don't be camera shy. Also, have a good set of earphones if we wanna block out the noise around us.

Instead of a physical classroom, we use Zoom as a virtual classroom to be connected with our lecturers and course mates. I'm really happy to see all of my course mates again. We may not see each other like we used before on campus but I'm sure we will meet physically one day. This semester is going to a bumpy ride, I hope I can achieve my goals! Hope everyone stays safe.

Opinion: What I Have Learned Throughout the Movement Restriction Order

Due to the Covid-19 outbreak in Malaysia, the government decided to implement the Movement Restriction Order from 18 Mar 2020 to 31 Mar 2020. All activities will be postponed until further notice. First of all, the Movement Restriction Order also known as Movement Control Order (MCO), is not a "lockdown". We could still go out to buy all the essentials, but we have to practice social distancing whenever we go out to buy any basic needs.

The MCO didn't affect me much as I'm on my semester break (I came back way before the order was implemented). One way or another, it will affect my studies a little for this upcoming semester. I wasn't really sure whether classes will be resumed physically or will be conducting virtually. I still have to wait further announcements from the university for any necessary precautions.

Nonetheless, I keep myself updated with news from official news site every now and then. If I'm not catching up with the news, I would read the books which I left off or listen to podcasts such as Mamak Sessions from JinnyBoy and Unboxing People (Mandarin podcast). I think this is the best time to spend with our family members, or pick up a new skill. Recently, there was a DIY dalgona coffee was booming the Internet. I would like to make one for my family.

Everyone was waiting for the Movement Restriction Order to be lifted but the government announced that a second phase of the order, starting from 1 April 2020 to 14 April 2020, which means more stricter rules will be imposed. My university will be conducting lessons starting from 6 April, all projects and assignments will be conducting digitally including classes. Although, we couldn't go back physically to see our friends on campus, thanks to the advanced technology that we have today, we are able to get in touch through video calls or on our respective social media platforms to keep in touch.

To all the front line runners, thank you so much for the sacrifices, we salute you for keeping everyone in the country safe. As Malaysians, let us stay at home.

CNY Day 12: Star Media Group CNY Lion Dance Blessing (5/2/2020)

The CNY celebration is not over yet for the staffs at Star Media Group (SMG), as we have our very own lion dance blessing. This is my first time experiencing as an intern, I'm really excited. By the time I reach the office, I see two yellow lion heads on either side of the entrance, later on we will be heading down to watch the performance.

I head up to the Corporate Communication department to start another day of internship. As the time nears, my fellow colleague Ain, makes the announcement to inform all the staff at Menara Star that later on a lion dance will be holding at the main lobby. Not long after, we head down to the main lobby. All the management team are clad in the company's corporate colour - red, which is also a lucky colour in the Chinese culture, representing good luck and fortune.

The signal of drum beating that the lions come to live! During the plucking green session (采青), one lion on the ground, and the other goes around to "play" with the staffs and management team. The performance ends with the lions presenting the management team the plucked greens. After that, it's back up to the our respective departments cause the lions will be going to department to department.

My colleagues are accompanying the lion dance performers going around the office, while Aaron and I stay back to continue our work which we left off. As the clashing of drums and symbols are getting louder at the 7th floor, the lions are here! I touch the lions for good luck, hoping my internship will be smooth and be successful in life throughout the year.

Too bad I didn't put the ang pau (red packet) and oranges on my table but next year I'll be sure to put them on my working table.

很多车!(wak nang dui lai lo! jin choi chia!)”

Melody DJ 《I Love You 早晨》———— 大宝和Anson,当然少不了MY DJ ———— Jack 叶朝明!
