TogetherLAH! Post Celebration (26/11/18)

TogetherLAH! campaign had came to an end on 2 Nov 2018, but the celebration wasn't over for the organising team. To celebrate the success of the campaign, as well as the hard work and effort, we were treated a lunch buffet at Sunway Hotel Resort Spa! It's also a good time to relax ourselves before the final examination.
I clad in a Mickey Mouse shirt with a batik twist, and donned the unity pin by Projek57 (our collaborator of the campaign). I was a little lost when I reached at the resort as this is my first time visiting the place. With the help from the staffs, we managed to find our course mates who were enjoying the food.
After settling down, it's time for me to go for a little food hunt. I didn't have anything while I was on my way to resort, so I guessed this is the best time to turn that tummy frown upside down. Joanne joined me for the food hunt too! On my plate, I had potato salad, baked potato, prawns, brinjal with fish head curry sauce and rice to finish up the main course. As for my appetizer, it's every Malaysian's favourite- satay! Adding peanut sauce and ketupat making the best combination to start up the post-celebration luncheon.
We also munched up some fruits and cakes in between as desserts. Mine was fruits and vanilla ice cream, a sweet dessert was the perfect way to end our luncheon. I wanted to have more on the cakes but my tummy is now in a happy mood but it's okay I'm sure I'll try them next time.
We also took a few photos as well, as the background of the resort was worth for some photos that we decided to post it on Instagram or any of our social media accounts.
Thank you Sunway Hotel Resort Spa for hosting the delicious luncheon and as one of our main sponsors throughout the campaign. I'll definitely be back next time when there's a chance. Once again, it was a huge honour to be a part of the campaign! Maybe there will be a TogetherLAH! 2.0? Never might know what will happen right?

Mickey Mouse 90th Anniversary Celebration (17/11/18)

Who's the leader of the house that's meant for you and me? M-I-C-K-E-Y M-O-U-S-E! Yes, it's the Mickey Mouse 90th anniversary celebration here at Pavilion KL, Malaysia! Since Mickey Mouse is in Malaysia for a visit, why not give him a warm Malaysian welcome?

I'm a huge Disney fan, and I bet everyone mostlly grew up watching Disney Channel right? Pavilion KL is going to be packed with people, so it's safer to be in my "carriage" when I get there. On the way, I look up Disney Malaysia's official Instagram account to know more about the event. One of the Mickey Mouse sculptures is made up of 50,000 crystals! We have a hard time to get in the parking lot as evening time is peak hours in the big city. Luckily, we manage to find a parking spot, and it's off to magical adventure to the main hall of Pavilion!

I'm shopping for some clothes, I see a familiar face at the stage area. I spot Gabriel and the other Mouseketeers (Wafiy, Dheena, Faiz, Erissa and Ellya). Most of all I finally meet Charis, also known as Kak Charis! She's the captain of the Mouseketeers and my favourite among them all! I want to take a picture with her but all the Mouseketeers are in their stand-by position for the performance later on.

The emcee, Nadia, comes up to the stage to greet the roaring crowd! All the designs which are going to be modeled are the top 10 creations by Malaysia's fashion designers from all walks of life. This is my very first fashion show in my life! What's more? It's Disney! The fashion shows starts with the role call of the Mousekeeters with the theme song of Club Mickey Mouse, follow by my two favourite songs- Take on the World and Crazy. I didn't stay out throughout the celebration due to timing but overall I have the best time!

Unfortunately, I didn't meet Mickey Mouse himself but my mum bought me a soft toy of him to commemorate my 21st birthday two weeks ago (2 Nov 2018). Yes, I had a Disney birthday to mark my milestone to adulthood.

As I'm about to leave, I have a surprise encounter with Malaysia's national mixed doubles player- Chan Peng Soon! It's a dream come true! It's really a magical event! If you ask me, would I go for  a second trip? The answer is definitely yes! I guess no matter how old we are, Mickey is for everyone because he is everyone's favourite mouse!

Selamat datang ke Malaysia, Mickey! Happy 90th anniversary Mickey Mouse! Hope you will continue to spread the joy and love in your big heart!

TogetherLAH! Closing Ceremony (2/11/18)

One and a half months had gone in a blink of an eye, it’s time for the students of DCLA to wrap up the TogetherLAH campaign with a closing ceremony. In case you are wondering what is the campaign about, let me tell you to refresh that memory.

TogetherLAH! is a Malaysian themed campaign run by DCLA’s Year 2 students of PR Project Management and Corporate Communication at Sunway University. Our aim is to inculcate the Malaysian culture and create favourable attitudes towards the country.

Everyone arrives at the Art Gallery to finish up the final touches of the decorations, to make sure everything is in top shape. Once settled down, I look around the room to see all the decorations, including all the flags we have created out of sticky notes- leaving "love letters" as part of our MY Home Gallery. I found three of my letters, not sure where are the remaining six, probably they are around somewhere.

I go back to my seat to watch the rehearsal of one of the performers, Steven Soon. As the time nears 9.45am, time for us to take into positions. As always, I’m in the registration along side Jaya, Veronica, Sonia and Chelsea. There is a little hiccup during the registration as I’m super nervous but luckily I’m back on track in that split second.

Once I’m off from the job, it’s time for me to go in to relax and enjoy the closing ceremony. At 11.00am, the VIPs are escorted by our very own Sunway Kompang Club. The event begins with the singing of the national anthem the Negaraku, then follow by the speeches from our sponsors and collaboration partner, Projek 57, and of course, our campaign director, Ms. Joanne Yep herself. In her speech, she emphasises that the key for the success of the campaign, is the trust between team members, besides communication.

To live up the atmosphere, we have performances from UiTM’s Gelai Qamar Dansa, who perform a traditional Malaysian dance which combines the three main races- Malay, Chinese and Indian. The event continues with a lucky draw session. Too bad I didn’t get a lucky draw number, if not I would enjoy a high tea session! Okay, let’s get back to the ceremony.

I’m enjoying throughout the ceremony, Jaya escorts our national ice hockey player- Low Jun Ming, alongside his girlfriend to their seats which are just right beside me. Oh wow, is this a dream? I’m siting next to a national athlete! I introduce to Jun and his girlfriend, Robyn. A full video montage is shown on the screen which comprises all of our events- the opening ceremony, Lokal Bazaar and Lokal Night.

"It’s so thoughtful of your course mates to include you in the flash mob dance," Robyn says when she sees my appearance in the final dance number of the flash mob. I thank her for the compliment. An interview of Jun pops up on the screen, and later he is introduced to everyone in the room after that.
The ceremony continues with a second session of lucky draw and a Bollywood dance, once again from the dancers from UiTM! After Steven’s final performance, it’s time to dig in some food! I know everyone is hungry for the whole day! We have karipap, kuih lapis, muruku and onde-onde just to name a few.

A group photo is taken to commemorate the memorable moment! Thank you everyone for supporting our campaign. We hope you that your inner Malaysian is found and a whole new perspective of being a proud Malaysian in this new era! It’s a double celebration for me as well, as I turn 21 today!

I would like to thank my campaign director and co-director, Joanne and Gene for leading the team. The patience, guidance and trust which leads the team to victory! Of course, our campaign would not be a success without the guidance from our lecturer, Mr. Suffian, himself for believing in us.

This is not the end, this is just the beginning. We hope that the patriotism towards the new Malaysian era does not end here. As young Malaysians, we are the future of the country and hope to inspire other young Malaysians to develop a love for Malaysia. It doesn’t have to be big, even a smallest act can turn into something big.

I’m proud to say that I’m a Malaysian! Saya anak Malaysia! Malaysia boleh! 🇲🇾

Punchlain SU Comedy Night (20/10/18)

Are you feeling stress about the piling assignments these days? Or you feel down over a recent incident? Can't find anything to cheer you up? Head over to Punchlain SU organised by DCLA's Year 3 students of PR Project Management at Sunway University!

Weeks before the event, the seniors came to drop by promoting their event during Issue and Crisis Communication lecture. I was a little hesitant to come because I was not sure about my plans in hand yet., until yesterday one of the seniors, Amanda, that the team had five free tickets. At one point, I was thinking, "Hey, since there is a free ticket, why not give it shot?" It's worth a shot since I didn't go to a comedy night before. My seniors are super supportive, why not return them favour?

I make my way up to JC 2, the seniors are still doing some last-minute checking to make sure the event is in top form. Most of them recognised me because I covered their previous event during the last semester- BeYoutiful. My tummy starts to rumble when I see the food pantry but it is not opened until 7.00pm. Oh yeah, I also receive my free tickets while waiting.

Once the food pantry is opened, everyone heads to the food pantry to dig in. My favorites are the curry puff and the brownies, and especially the egg sandwich! I also bump into my course mates too! They are surprised to see me at the event, "Hey Kar Marn, I didn't know you are here! Did you buy a ticket?" they ask, "No, I got it one for free from one of the seniors," I say.

I take two photos at the photo booth by Fuji Film, one is with course mates and the other one is with my seniors. As we are waiting patiently for the photos to be printed out, the doors are opened and it's time for us to go in. It's okay I can collect the photos later when the show ends.

Once everyone settles in, our lovable emcee, Ruwan, takes the stage. "As they always say, laughter is the best medicine!" the crowd cracks up, and it's true! I have to agree with that saying 100%. We have performances from Kavin Jay, Ayim Razak, Papi Zak, Chrissy Wu and Gajen Nad. Overall, my favorite performances are from Gajen Nad, who kills his last performance with a Hindi and Indian dance. It's totally awesome!

We also have a game in between to ease up the atmosphere. I'm not good with jokes so I didn't have anything in mind. If I had ever come up with one, trust me, it's not funny at all! Anyway, back to the show!

After the event, tokens of appreciation are given out to the VIPs and the event director, Ms. Sheena herself, make a speech to thank everyone for coming and making the event a huge success.  I have my one-on-one interview with one of the crews, Angie.

Katelyn (K): What is the main purpose of the event?

Angie: (A): We have three goals when planning the comedy night. First of all, the Malaysian comedy scene is under appreciated, cause most of them think that comedy won't make out of money. Secondly, we want to nurture fresh and young talents in the comedy scene. The third and final goal is give people a relaxing time to distress themselves from their hectic work and assignments, especially. Also, we have collaborated with Shelter Home, a there is not enough donations for the children who are living at the home itself.

K: Why did the team choose a comedy as the theme for this semester's event? I realised that previous semesters, they held balls event.

A: Like you have mentioned earlier, they held balls event in previous semesters which the team think is common. So we decide to be different by having this comedy night so that everyone can have fun. It also benefits people too. You know the people in big states like KL and Selangor, they are really stress out from work and studies, it may lead to depression or any mental health related issues. With this event, we hope they can relive the stress through laughter.

K: How did the team overcome conflicts?

A: We overcome conflicts by talking it out on whatever we do or anything comes out of hand instead of keeping to ourselves which can lead to miscommunication. The key is to communicate!

K: Anything you want to say to the team?

A: Although it's tough, we are grateful that each of us in the team did a fantastic job to make the event. We're happy and satisfied on the outcome of the event.

K: Thank you!

A: No worries! Thank you for coming to the event.

Congratulations on the success of the event, it is definitely a night fill with joy and laughter. If you miss you out that night, you can catch all the highlights on Punchlain's official FB page and Instagram account.

TogrtherLAH! Lokal Night (17/10/18)

After a week of semester break, it's time for the students of Sunway University to head back to campus. But for the DCLA students, something really got them excited, what is it? I'll tell you in a bit later on. And guess what? The TogetherLAH! team is back!

In case some of you have forgotten what is TogetherLAH! campaign is about, let me refresh the memory. TogetherLAH! is a Malaysian themed campaign run by DCLA's Year 2 students of PR Project Management and Corporate Communication  at Sunway University, to inculcate the Malaysian culture among Malaysians and create a favourable attitude towards the country for our international counterparts.

I'm sure most of you are really curious what is the big event right? Drum rolls please! We bring you Lokal Night also known as cultural night! Isn't this exciting? Before the big event, I'm going to take you on behind-the-scenes to see what we are up to prepare the big night.

The team gathers at the corridor of LT 7 and 8 to finish the final details. Some of them are in charged of the photo booth decoration, the completed flag expression board as well as blowing up the balloons. I'm a little bored as I have nothing to do and not much to help out at that time, but I entertain one of the performers.

As the time nears 6pm, we all head to the entrance of JC 1 to get our positions ready. I'm at the registry counter along side Mei Fong, Chivonne, Jessica, Christine as well as Ezac. My position is the VIP attendant, which means I'm in charged of the VIP guest list. Upon registration, VIP and guests will receive a goodie bag which contains Malaysian childhood snacks- Apollo biscuits, jelly, Kopi O sweet etc. Don't they just bring back the childhood memories? Even Sunway Education Group Senior Executive Director, Dr. Elizabeth Lee is impressed and surprised with the door gifts when presented.

I'm star struck when I attend Talitha Tan, who is the guest performer for the night. I even take a selfie with her. Okay, back to work! All the VIP guests list are done, it's time to move on to the normal guests list and walk-ins.

The doors are opened as scheduled at 7.15pm, students and guests start to fill up the hall. The registry team is still on duty.

When I’m told that I have to stay up until 10.00pm and miss the whole performance, I’m a little sad and disappointed. I missed my favourite performances which are the wushu and tai chi as well as the Chinese orchestra.

To cheer myself up, I munch on the childhood snacks. After awhile, our event supervisor, Kavind, leads me into the hall to enjoy the rest of the show, which means I’m off from the job!

The lucky draw is up. One of our course mates is the lucky winner of the night. Our guest performer, Talitha, performs three songs: America Boy, Mine, and her original- Okay, follow by a sharing session on what makes us Malaysians. The final performance which is another traditional Malay dance by the MSU’s Performance Arts and Cultute Club (PACC).

The event ends with the appreciation ceremony and a group photo. With that, lokal night is a success!

As a Malaysian, I'm proud of our diversity. Our campaign is coming to an end with our closing ceremony on 2 November 2018.

Follow our FB page and Instagram account for more updates of our campaign.

UN SDG 3rd Anniversary Celebration 2018 at Sunway University (7/10/18)

The semester break has officially started, most of them have already gone back to their respective hometowns to spend their one-week holiday. Before I head back to my hometown, Melaka, I decide to spend my weekend on campus. Is there a big event on campus? It's the third anniversary celebration of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), it is celebrated all around the world!

You must be what are the Sustainable Development Goals? The Sustainable Development Goals was launched by the United Nations (UN) on 7 October 2015. These global goals are the challenges that we face in the world today such as poverty, inequality, huger, health, education etc. We hope to reach the 17 goals by 2030, to ensure that we leave no one behind.

As I arrive on the campus' football field, there's a big stage and two performers are singing to the late Michael Jackson's Beat It, as if I'm attending my very first open-air concert on campus! Oh wait, I am! I make my way to one of the tents to ward off the intense heat. Thanks to the Sunway Student Volunteers (SSV), they give out complimentary drinks to the participants at the event and also badges for the goals, as well as posters!

I'm waiting for my friend Hanis to arrive. I'm near the VIP tent, I bump into a few famous faces. Malaysia's famous comedian and funniest man in the world- Harith Iskander, along with his wife, Dr. Jezzmine Lim, and state assembly person for Subang Jaya- YB Michelle Ng. Not long after, Hanis has arrived. As we are chatting, the emcee announces the arrival of HRH the Raja Muda of Selangor. Quickly, I jump off from the stage and we look for another platform to have a seat.

We found one not far from the VIP tent. At around 9.00am, the celebration begins. When High School Musical's We're All in this Together is played, the flag bearers for each goal comes up to the stage. Who doesn't love High School Musical? I even dance to the music! To start off the celebration, Sunway University Cheerleading (SUC) is here to heat up the stage with their amazing stunts and flips!

The emcee asks all the students to move forward to the stage. I'm still remain on the platform as it is difficult for me to get down on the grass. One by one, 17 VIPs come up to the stage and make their pledge on the goals they are passionate in. At one point, Hanis checks on me to make sure that I'm comfortable.  Sunway founder, Tan Sri Jeffery Cheah, AO, makes his speech to wrap up all the 17 goals. A drone flies over to capture the momentous event, Hanis and I wave to the camera.

When the VIPs come to our side, we shake hands with his HRH the Raja Muda of Selangor. I give my best curtsy when I meet HRH. I have a mini reunion with the national tenpin bowler, Sin Li Jane. We met before at last year's SEA Games homecoming celebration. I even give Li Jane a big hug!

The celebration is not over yet! I have my own VIP moment at the tent, and a good view of the stage too! A magic show,  opera singing, a group of kid dancers, and the best part of all is the performance from the Malaysian Army! With that, the celebration of the SDG has come to a close. I'm super happy that I attended the biggest UN event in the world, apart from Model United Nations (MUN). Maybe I can represent UN Malaysia for one of these goals as a youth ambassador, who knows right?

I, CHIN Kar Marn, make a pledge on Good Health and Well-Being. Let us join hands and make a pledge to each of the SDG that we are passionate in.

“Katelyn!”

Bodhi Heartz

TogetherLAH! Lokal Bazaar (26/9/18-28/9/18)

Hey! It's TogetherLAH! campaign's first main event! What is it? It's the Lokal Bazaar! Isn't it exciting? After Global Branding and Identity lecture, we head to the boulevard, college link bridge and the walkway respectively to get into our positions. Although I'm not on the job today, I have to help out my department- research and evaluation team, to collect surveys for those who drop by at our booths at the college boulevard.

Most of us are at the boulevard to help to set up the photo booth in collaboration with MY Home Gallery for our social media photo contest. I sit on the round bench at the boulevard with my own "personal booth". The time is still early, only a few students drop by to check out the booths. Don't forget we have food as well, such as our signature onde-onde, cakes from Good Memories cake house, muruku to make your tummy happy! Not enough? Head over to the walkway between the college and univerity, there are four food vendors selling Malaysians' all-time favourites- nasi lemak and satay!

We all know that when it comes to food, Malaysians love to have a good treat! If you missed our publicity week, fret not! Because here's your second chance to write your "love letters" to Malaysia.  It's located at the college link bridge.

On the second day of the bazaar, no vendors is around at the college boulevard because it's MUFY's (Monash University Foundation Year) Sharity carnival. We still do have the food trucks along the walkway of the campus. Since I'm a MUFY alum myself (class of 2016), why not head over to promote the campaign to my former lecturers and juniors? It's gonna be a win-win promotion! Double the event, double the promotion!

Besides our campaign, there are few booths beside ours. One of them is the Chinese Cultural Society (SUCSS), they are promoting their singing competition finals. I manage to get two of them from the society to write their message on our Jalur Gemilang expression board. They even buy two unity ribbons.

What is the unity ribbon? The unity ribbon is a project by Projek  57. It's exactly like the national flag but only it's in the form of the ribbon, it also has our Father of Independence and first Prime Minister, Tunku Abdul Rahman at the side of it. All the profits will be going to the foundation  to help the orang asli children to receive education. We'll also doing charity at the same time, because the orang asli is also part of the Malaysian community. Not to mention that our onde-onde is a big hit of the bazaar. We manage to sell all of them!

On the third and final day of the bazaar, everyone gathers at the college boulevard because we are having a photo shooting session. I'm in charge with the attendance. The next hour before the bazaar starts, we put up all the signs around campus and make sure everything is in top form. As the time is near 10.00am, Chivonne and I head up to the college link bridge to start our duty.

My job is to wave the flag to attract people and pull some students over to complete our Jalur Gemilang expression board. At one point we lost count the number of sticky notes written, there are too many of them. Nonetheless, we manage to keep track. Since it's the last day of the bazaar, we promote our stickers at just only RM 1!

Once my shift is done, I head to the library to chill off due to the scorching heat. When I head back to the link bridge, they are lacking of manpower at the college boulevard. All that walking sure make my tummy rumbling. I bought lok lok from Mei Tuan food delivery! To get a 50% discount, all you have to do is to like and follow their Facebook page and Instagram account. We also have a lucky draw too! Who knows you might get a cash prize?  The good news is the unity ribbon which we collaborate with Projek 57 have all sold out!

The three-day Lokal Bazaar is a success! Thank you for those who drop by to support the campaign, I'm sure you have a happy tummy after tasting all the delicious food we have throughout the bazaar. Our upcoming event is the cultural night, we bring you Lokal Night, which is happening on 17 October 2018. Sunway campus' student and staffs can get their tickets at RM 18 while external parties is RM 23. It's a night to embrace the beauty of Malaysian cultures! Grab your tickets now!

TogetherLAH! Merchandise Selling (20/9/18-21/9/18)

We don't have class for the whole day, that doesn't mean we can sit back and relax right? We still have a campaign to run, I'm sure most of you know which campaign I'm talking about. That's right! It's our Malaysian theme campaign- ToetherLAH! by the Year 2 students of DCLA from Sunway University.

With the huge support we received from last week's flashmob opening ceremony, it motivated us to do even better in this mini event! Start your morning by having a pack of  homemade brownies to light up the day! I bought a pack myself, just in case my tummy grumbles in class or something. Most of our course mates are at the college boulevard, while the rest of us are in class doing our assignments and homework to let the time pass until it's our turn to head down to the booth.

When it's time for my booth duty, I head to the college boulevard with the campaign directors, Joanne and Weng Gene. We step out of the classroom, some of the students say: "Hey, we didn't get the brownies! They were sold out!" Wow! The brownies are the crowd's favorites! Don't worry! We'll be selling more tomorrow.

As we arrive at the boulevard, the flag is almost filled with messages. What you want to say to Malaysia? We bring you "Build a Flag" expression board. We just write what we want to say to the country and paste the message or "love letter" to the board which is in the form of the Jalur Gemilang (Stripes of Glory). Isn't it amazing?

After settling down at the booth, I take a red paper and pen to write my "love letter" to Malaysia. We have three batches of expression boards on the first day itself! We have to keep the third one which is way halfway through as the booth is near closing time.

On the second and last day, we continue with our expression board at the college link bridge. At the boulevard, the brownies are back and we have another delicacy to add to your taste buds- onde-onde! Besides that, stickers to bring fun to your boring lecture notes and henna to show your creative side!

Stay tune for our upcoming big event which is the Lokal Bazzar, happening on the 26 September 2018 till 28 September 2018! Get your taste buds ready and bring that tummy frown upside down!

Sunway PCV Mental Health Camapign: I'm Only Human (19/9/18)

It's time to put my passion- mental health, into the test! Sunway Peer Counselling Volunteer (PCV) is having a mental health awareness campaign which is starting from today (19 Septtember 2018) till tomorrow (20/9/18). I didn't go to the opening ceremony, as I have some assignments to get them done.

Since there is no one around the stage area, I just sit there. The stage is my favourite place in the world! I can think about life and the challenges that I've gone through, a question struck me: How can I normalise mental health? Well, we just have to find out later at the forum. After my class ends, I head over to the Art Gallery at Level 1 for Walk in My Shoes. I bump into my friends who are also going to the session as well, why not join them to make up the party?

Walk in My Shoes is stepping into a person's world who is suffering from mental health, we are taken to each scene to feel the pain and sorrow. I almost cried and my heart sinks at one point, because I can feel the main character is calling out for help but none of them is willing to step out for her and give a voice to say that: "Hey, it's okay! We got you!"

Participants are taken into a room to watch videos on mental health which are highlighted from key peoples such as Subang Jaya state assembly person, YB Michelle Ng, Sunway Education Group Senior Executive, Dr. Elizabeth Lee and Student LIFE director, Ms. Lee Siok Ping. Once we are out from the gallery, we are given a free gift but I want the soft toy because it is so cuddly and cute!

As night falls, time to hit the dance floor at the university foyer! Hanis and I dance to Bill Ray Cyrus' Achy Breaky Heart, which is not easy! There is a slight difference in the dance steps, compare to the one I learned in primary school. The line dance session ends with the chicken dance. I even have a one-on-one chat with YB Michelle Ng herself on mental health. She recgornised me as I was a delegate at SUNMUN last month, she officiated the event.

Hanis and I make our way to JC1 to attend the mental health forum. The first two rows seats are for the VIPs. We have speakers from the fire and rescue department, police force, medical experts as well as from members of parliament, YB Hannah Yeoh, the Deputy Minister Of Woman and Community, and YB Wong Chen. Each of the speaker talks about the awareness and issues of mental health.

Counselling is one thing but the concepts of that in Malaysians’ minds is: If one goes to seek counsel, that means they have a problem. YB Hannah mentions in her message that counselling is just a follow up on a basis, to keep track of a progress. I went to counselling once back in high school, I’m still a good student. The floor is opened up for some Q & A session from the audience, I’m in the second batch of the questions. My question is: How can we normalise mental health among peers on campus? I have a chat with Ms. Lee on that question.

After the forum, a group photo is taken to commerate the important event. On the way out, I have a small chat with YB Hannah and a photo opportunity too! We almost forgot our bags which are left in the auditorium. Oops!

Actually mental health is not that bad, it's how we perceive the issue in our own point of views. How do you define mental health in your own terms? If I can make a change to normalise mental health, you can as well! I'm going to continue my passion in mental health.

TogetherLAH! Flashmob Opening Ceremony (14/9/18)

The students of Department of Communication and Liberal Arts (DCLA) at Sunway University are running a Malaysian theme campaign- TogetherLAH! We decide to launch our campaign in conjunction with the upcoming Malaysia Day. Today is the day, the launch of our campaign! Everyone arrives early to class for the final touches.

At the back of the classroom, all the equipment for the flash mob are ready to go! Our lecturer, Mr. Suffian gives us words of encouragement to give our best during the launch of the campaign. Everyone especially the girls are putting on make up. As I'm making a final appearance, a simple lipstick will do the trick.

Outfit wise, I'm in an all-black ensemble and draped with the Malaysia flag, to show the love of the country.  At 10.00am, we head to another classroom to continue the things we left off just now. We turn on patriotic songs to suit the atmosphere.

Half an hour later, we run through a final rehearsal. We have to move the tables and chairs to a side due to the size of the classroom. I'm in charge of the music as I'm sitting at the computer table. To pass the time, we browse through YouTube videos to search more patriotic songs and music which are made in Malaysia by our very own Malaysian singers.

As the time of the flash mob nears , we have a quick round up of briefing. Besides, the campaign is not all about work. Don't forget to just smile and most importantly have fun! Once we get the signal from Daniel that is time to go down for the flash mob which is held at the university foyer, located near Fresco cafeteria. We split into two groups in either side of the lift to save time.

When we arrive at the foyer, the flash mob starts off with the Malay dance. We clap to the beat and cheer our course mates on, also to live up the mood for the people who drop by to watch our performance. I'm ushered by Kavind to grab my seat which is already prepared for me. Next up is the Chinese dance, follow by the Indian dance- which is one of my favorites.

Towards the end of the Indian dance, it's time for me to get into position for the final song of the performance. At the start of the final song- Malaysia Boleh! Ezac leads the team with the first clap, that's when my cue comes in to join in the final dance of the flash mob. Once positioned in my seat, the song comes in.

The flash mob ends with Joanne, our campaign director, gives an introductory of the campaign and leads the whole team by shouting our tagline: We stand TogetherLAH! With that, TogetherLAH! campaign is officially on the run! We wish everyone an advance Happy Malaysia Day! We stand TogetherLAH! as a nation.

FairMUN 2018 (7/9/18-9/9/18)

After having a "home advantage" at Sunway Model United Nations (SUNMUN), it's time to step out of the campus to represent the Sunway team at Fairview MUN! I'm in the ECOSOC council and guess which country I'm representing? It's none other than my beloved country- Malaysia! As a tribute to the country, I wore a yellow dress. Yellow or gold in particular is the national colour of Malaysia. I didn't have a gold dress so yellow was fine.

When I arrived at FairView International School, one of the secretariats led me to the registration table for me to sign up. After signing up, I was led to the forth floor for the opening ceremony. Before that, I had a mini reunion with some of my friends. As delegates started to fill the hall up, I made my way back to my seat. Welcoming speeches were made from the FairMUN teacher advisor and VIPs- who are from United Nations Association Malaysia (UNAM) or also known as UNAM Youth.

In mid opening ceremony I had to rush back to Sunway College to attend my younger sister's annual choir recital- Messages in the Bottle. On the second day, I went to the wrong council as I didn't know where ECOSOC was, the admins escorted me to the second floor. As I missed the first two sessions, so I was in a blur zone. My fellow delegates gave me an update on the lobbying session. We discussed on the ICT incorporating with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Before that, Gareth, the co-chair gave us tips on sticking to our countries' policies.

The debate started at 11.00am, our topic was on SDG 7- Affordable and Clean Energy. The council started to heat up a little when the delegate of Japan was firing everyone in the council, until the chair and co-chair had to bang guvnor a few times to get the council settle down. It kind of reminded me in UNHRC at SUNMUN as the delegate of Saudi Arabia was firing every country.

In mid debate, the secretariat team came in. They asked us whether we were aware that there would be an open mic session at social night. Wait, an open mic? Count me in! I love being on stage! But before that, let's fill up our tummies with dinner so we could have the energy to sing and dance all night at socials. We had a few upbeat music to live up the mood, everyone was so into it. I decided to settle down the mood. I sang Love Paradise by Hongker singer, Kelly Chen and Crazier by Taylor Swift. We even had a pool party, how cool is that? I didn't go in to the pool, I didn't want to ruin my dress.

On the third and final day of the council, we finally came to discuss on the topic of implementing ICT into 17 SDGs. I was a little distracted, until the delegate of Japan mentioned Malaysia. I quickly gathered up my poise. In the ICT implementation was mainly dominated by the science industry. We discussed on mental health as well! I got all passionate and I made a speech on mental health too!

Delegates were escorted to the hall for the closing ceremony. A short video was presented to highlight the three days of the conference. Awards were given out to delegates who did a fantastic job in their councils. I didn't get any awards but hey, everyone is a winner! I was super happy when I received my certificate of participation, it's my third one this year!

FairMUN 2018 had been a blast! Thanks Amir and the team for making us delegate feel at home throughout the three-day conference. This will be my last MUN in 2018, but don't worry I'll be making a comeback, hope to see you all next year!

C & S Carnival Cycle 2 2018 (4/9/18-6/9/18)

Hey guys, university is resumed for three weeks now, everyone is settling into their new semester. Since most of the things are in control, the next question is: What should I do next? Are there anything interesting activities to join on campus? Fear not, Sunway University College Clubs and Societies (C & S) carnival is back for the second time around!

Before I headed to Sunway Buddhist Society's booth at the college boulevard, I dropped by at the Sunway University Chinese Cultural Society to renew my membership. After that, it's off to the booth! I had a hard time to look for the booth as we didn't set up our bunting but I did recgornise the treasurer, Sil Leong, who was doing his homework. When I settled down, I realised I was way behind my schedule for my online work., since no one came by to the booth.

My friend, Jia Xin, dropped by at the booth for awhile. He asked whether members needed to pay fees in the society. No, in Buddhist Society students don't need to pay anything! Just register will do the trick! My shift was only one and a half hour, I needed to head to my final class of the day- Psychology in Communication. In the class, we just need to form a set of questionnaire for our upcoming project. When class ended, I headed outside of the LT classrooms at the ground floor, to catch up with some homework.

I had an activity after university hours, I watched the Sunway University Cheer team practice. I even learned the counting of the chant. It was easy, I could say. Even though I couldn't join the cheer team due to my physical condition, that didn't stop me to have a little "school spirit" after a long day in university.

On the second day, Jia Xin convinced me to join Sunway University Marketing Society and the Psychology Club. I was a bit hesitant to join, "C'mon Katelyn, just join in!" Jia Xin persuaded. "I'll think about it, thank you!" I said. I dropped by at the Sunway Peer Counselling Volunteer (PCV), they are going to have an event called "I'm Only Human"- a mental health campaign. I was interested as I have a passion in mental health.

I even dropped by to say hi to Ming Han, who is in the Sunway Chinese Independent Alumni Club (CISA). He is the one who taught me on the drums. Unfortunately, we can't play them as Student Life restricted us from distracting students who were having classes on campus. Guess what? SunVoice held by the Chinese Cultural Society came back for its third season. I didn't make the cut to the top 10 to represent the university, I was happy to make a come back to center stage.

On the third and final day of the C & S carnival, I hung out at the foyer as it was inconvenient for me to go over to the boulevard, since it was raining and the floor was slippery. We had performances from Sunway Dance Club and Sunway Chinese Orchestra to live up the mood! There we have it, the three-day of C & S has ended.

If you are interested to join any of the clubs and societies, be sure to drop by an email or follow their social media accounts to give you an up-to-date on the activities they are going to have on campus! I hope you have found the right club or society that suits the inner you to shine on campus.

Back to University: Year 2 Semester 2 (21/8/18)

School is out for primary and secondary school students, but for the students at Sunway University, it's back to university after a long month of semester break. Yesterday was a big day for us, because the examination results of our previous semester were released! I was super happy with my results because I passed every subject, so I'm officially stepping into Year 2 semester 2!

I head to my favourite place on campus- the library, to chill out before the first lecture begins at 10am. At around 9.30am, I make my way to the first lecture of the day which is Intercultural Communication. As I reach the classroom, my course mates are already in there. "Hey girls, nice to see you all again!" I say as I make my way to my seat. "It's so good to see you too!" Jaya says.

Ms. Serena comes in and lecture begins! It's not really a lecture but more of a introductory of the subject of Intercultural Communication. I'm going to see her again at Psychology in Communication later on. I have a three-hour break, where should I go to first?

I come across the Sunway Peer Counseling Volunteer (PCV) booth at the university foyer. They have an upcoming event which is focusing on mental health. I have a passion in mental health. "Hi, are you interested to sign up for one of our job scopes? We are currently looking for students to fill up these roles," I study the flyer, they have job scopes such as poster designing, photography and video editing. I don't fill the requirements in any of the job scopes. "I'm sorry, I don't fill in any of the requirements," I say.

"It's alright! Would you like to leave a message?" the student asks me. I leave a message that it is okay to say, we can't just keep things to ourselves. As I'm making my way to the college lift, I bump into a student who I met at Sunway Model United Nations (SUNMUN) earlier this month. "Yes! I do remember you! You're the admin in UNHRC right?" I say. "Yes, yes I am! Where are you off to?" he asks.

I'm heading to the MUFY office, but also checking out the activities that are happening now around campus. Just before I head to the lift, there are some booths along the link bridge. Why not check them out for awhile? Sunway Student Volunteers (SSV) is having an event which is Run Towards the 17 Goals. I can't run but I'm passionate in Goals 3 and 4- quality in education and goodness in well being . I bump into my friend, Jia Xin. We have a short chat as he is going out for lunch with his friends.

As I enter the MUFY student hub, the juniors staring at me. Probably they didn't see me around before, but I bump into Daniel, who I met at SUNMUN. My lecturers are very happy to see me, and I get to talk to my new juniors. To fill up my free time, I watch some videos online to pass the time since there is no assignment yet.

I go to the wrong class, so I rush to the university because I'm missing a lot right now. I take a tumble while I'm on my way to UW 7-6, luckily my course mate helps me up. I'm running of breath but after I settle myself down, it is back to normal. Ms. Serena gives us an insight of Psychology in Communication, and the first two assignments are up for the day. One is an opinion paper and the other is a group project.

I'm looking forward to the new semester and I'm going to give my best. What's in store for Katelyn this time?

Sunway Model United Nations 2018: The Future Is... (10/8/18-12/8/18)

After I attended my first MUN (Model United Nations) back in April, I found it quite interesting and was looking forward to the next MUN. Four months later, I decided to make a come back at Sunway Model United Nations (SUNMUN) 2018!

Since I'm still on semester break, might as well join SUNMUN to fill up the boring holiday into a fun one. My council is the United Nation Human Rights Council (UNHRC), and I'm representing Japan. As a tribute to my host country, I wear a white dress and accessories with a red hairband to represent the national flag of Japan. When I arrive at the SUNMUN scene, delegates from other high schools and universities pack the corridors of the JC auditoriums. I'm happy to reunite with some of my friends who I met at my first MUN- Malaysia National Model United Nation (MNMUN). I also make some new ones as well.

The doors of JC1 are opened, delegates are given the green light to go in for the opening ceremony. I'm approached by Gordon, the chair of United Nations of General Assembly, who assumes that I'm a delegate of France. I tell him that I'm in the UNHRC and representing Japan. The opening ceremony begins with an introductory video, follow by speeches made from Dr. Elizabeth Lee, Senior Executive of Sunway Education Group and YB Michelle Ng, the state assembly person of Subang Jaya. With a bang, SUNMUN has now begun!

Admins escort delegates to their respective councils. My council is at LT3, sometimes I have lectures during normal university days. Anyway, we have a role call and the first thing we do is lobbying. What is lobbying? Lobbying is delegates go around the council to work together with other countries to discuss the topics they have in common. The countries I work with are India, Pakistan, Columbia, Myanmar and United States of America. We discussed on the working conditions of force labour in businesses.

After what we had discussed on the first day, the lobbying continues until 10.30am for the debate. I lobbied with the delegates of Brazil and Sierra Leone. We discussed on the legalisation on the sex industry. Thanks to delegate of Saudi Arabia, the council is getting to spice up a little. In mid debate, there is some security control on the campus, but thanks to the SUNMUN secretariat team everything is under control.

We are very tired after debating on the topic for hours, I can feel tummy rumbling. How to make that tummy frown upside down? SUNMUN Social Night of course! With all the good food and performances, my energy is recharged! During the after-party, I decide to take a stage to showcase my singing skills? Did I mention that Walter has a great singing voice?

The third and final day of SUNMUN, UNHRC is debating on the topic of working conditions in businesses. As I'm the main submitter, I have a rough start. I answer questions from delegates of Iran, Nigeria and Kenya. During the second half of the council, I'm informed that I'm shifted to the World Healthcare Organisation (WHO). WHO was my initial council as I have a passion on mental health. I'm placed as the delegate of Switzerland. The delegate of Germany discusses on how to normalise mental health by giving the appropriate education and guidance to change the concept towards certain social groups.

The debate comes to a close and we have a "mini award" within the WHO council. I'm crowned for best dressed female. The power of fashion! To fill up our energy for the closing ceremony, we head to Subway, where it's nearby the campus. I have a good chat with some delegates who I met earlier at the WHO council. Even though I attended for only 20 minutes.

The closing ceremony ends with a highlight video throughout these three days and awards are given out for outstanding delegates. Although the event is over, the friendship between delegates is not. Everyone takes selfies and group photos to commemorate the memorable day. I'm super happy when I receive my certificate of participation as the delegate of Japan in the UNHRC.

I'm proud to represent Sunway as a delegate. I'm looking forward to the next MUN. The future is really happening! Happy International Youth Day! What a day to end SUNMUN on a momentous occasion.

Day 2 of SUNMU

1 July 2018

My First Live Badminton Match at Celcom Axiata Malaysia Open (1/7/18)

I've always been a big fan of badminton, probably I was influenced by my daddy, who is a keen badminton player himself. I was preparing for my final examination when my mummy told me that daddy had two badminton match tickets. Wait, what? Two badminton tickets? Really? I was hesitated at first because that was the day I was going back home to Melaka to spend my last weekend before the final examination.

"It's up to you! Probably to see your idol- Lee Chong Wei for the first and probably the last," mummy said before walking off. Wow, a chance to see my idol- Lee Chong Wei at the Celcom Axiata Malaysia Open playing live! Should I go? My heart is telling me that I should go to watch the match, it's a chance of a lifetime! It was not easy to get a premium ticket to watch the most anticipated badminton match in Malaysia. "Alright, I'll go!" I told mummy.

The next day which was the day of the match. My parents turned on the television to watch the live broadcast of the match. From the footage of the stadium, there wasn't enough space as everyone was seen arriving and probably trying to get a good seat to catch a glimpse of Chong Wei later on. My daddy and I left the house later while the television was still broadcasting the match of the men's doubles.

The Celcom Axiata Malaysia Open was held at the Axiata arena in Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur. The arena is famous for holding big concerts and badminton matches. America songstress, Taylor Swift, held her Red World Tour five years ago at the very same arena. We had a hard time to look for a parking place as the disabled parking was full. After we got our tickets checked in, we headed in to the stadium. Apparently the men's doubles was still going on. This is it! My very first live badminton match in 21 years of my life!

The Japanese pair in black jersey won the men's doubles. From afar, I saw Chong Wei's boys- Kingston and Terrance Lee entering the stadium to cheer their super daddy later on. Chong Wei playing against Japan's rising badminton star, Kento Momota. The announcer's voice boomed through the speakers to announce the men's singles players. "Ladies and gentlemen, presenting Lee Chong Wei, Malaysia!" the crowd roared as Chong Wei made his entrance to the court. The background music was Chaya Juara- the theme song from Chong Wei's biographic movie, Lee Chong Wei.

I waved the Jalur Gemilang (Stripes of Glory) when Chong Wei entered. I've been a big fan of him since his debut at the Beijing Olympics 2008. Back in primary school Year 2, we learned our national athletes through the Bahasa Malaysia text book. Sometimes at the weekly assembly, the headmaster will mention Chong Wei in his speech so that we students would emulate him to become successful in the future.

Let's get back to the match, shall we? When a point was scored on Chong Wei's side, the crowd went completely wild. When he lost a point, I used the flag to cover my face and peaked through a little because we didn't know what would happen next. The first match ended with a score of 21-17. The second match was super intense as Momota was getting his way back up, but it didn't stop Chong Wei to back down as he had home advantage. It was a near match when the score reached 21-21. In badminton, 21 is the winning point. But if both players reached the 21st point, one of them must score another 2 extra points to beat their opponents.

The last point, Chong Wei challenged it because the shuttle hit out of the court. If the shuttle hit out, the winning point is Chong Wei's. Everyone was so intense when they viewed the official review from the screen. It showed the shuttle hit out of the court and Chong Wei won his 12th home title! Congratulations! You proved us once again that age is just a number. What a match!

My childhood dream is finally fulfilled. It's really different watching the match from home through the live broadcast to watching the match live in a stadium, where you can feel the atmosphere and energy! Speaking of battles, I have one coming up too! It's my final examination for Year 2 semester 1. If Chong Wei can do it, I can do it too! I'm looking forward to the next live badminton match at next year's Malaysia Open 2019. Who knows, I might have a closer encounter with Chong Wei next time?

In England, Great Britain they have Wimbledon Tennis Championship but in Malaysia we have badminton that can bring everyone together.
It's an all Japanese match for the men's doubles

SBS A Night of Musical Drama

Yay! A Night of Musical Drama is a success!
I'm proud to be on the team
Katelyn with her singer buddy- Derrick, who is also the main character of the show
Yih Cheng, thank you so much for your support!
Katelyn with her Sunway Chinese Cultural Society family
Katelyn with UCSI BuDdY!
Happy birthday, Joevie jie!

Sunway Social Innovators Club Human Library (20/6/18)

I love to read books. Books can take us anywhere with our imagination- be it a fairytale, an adventure or fictional you named them! Not only reading books can widen our knowledge and enhancing our language skills and vocabulary, it also makes us to become more compassion and kind towards others.

If there is any chance I would go to the library and book feast and spend for hours to check out the latest books to add in to my latest collection. My favorite genres of books are biographies, fiction and recently starting on romance.

But have you ever heard about the "Human Library"? The books actually talk to you, sounds interesting? A talking book like the ones we always watch on TV instead of a book form, these books are real humans! Sunway Social Innovators Club (SSIC) held its first "Human Library". There were four books in store for students and staff to "read". The first one was The Refugee from Myanmar, followed by The Refugee Teacher, The Homeless CEO and The Troubled Youth.

I didn't register prior to the event so I was considered a walk-in participant. But before going down to the "books", there were some rules and regulations for participants to abide by. After going through the four titles, my choice was The Refugee from Myanmar.

I spent 30 minutes to read the book. It was about a brave Myanmar girl who wanted to have a better life and future and came to Malaysia to seek refuge. She was hoping that her home country will accept her people and give them a citizenship like any people in Myanmar. Also, she was hoping the Malaysian government will take some action and look into this serious matter.

The girl of the book even started up her own NGO foundation and collaborated with Malaysian NGOs, to help people who are going through the same hardship as her. I loved the book so much and even read it for the second time!

I felt fortunate and blessed to live in a place where I have almost everything from family to education. Sometimes, I do take things for granted at some point but after reading this book, it made me realised that there are some people out there who really need our help to change their lives and create a bright future for them.

What else can I ask for? I'm the most luckiest girl ever! I'm looking forward to the next Human Library. Maybe something that related to mental health?

  心里按奈不住的兴奋!“Gabriel,long time no see!”
