ReForm MUN 2019 (1/3/19-3/3/19)

After taking a break from the MUN scene for half a year, it's time for Katelyn to make a come back. It's time to reform at ReForm MUN 2019! Forth in total and first MUN in 2019. I'm representing China and Switzerland in the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF). Representing two countries at once it's not easy compare to the usual one which is one country for two topics.

Paying tribute to the two countries I'm representing, I guess the colour red is the choice. Oh, here's a tip for the first-timers: Always pay tribute to the country you are representing. Be it the colour of the flag or the national flower or even bring a stuff animal that represents the country (I've seen it once in my very first MUN), it shows that we have the respect for that country.

After my parents drop me off at Dwi Emas International School, I make the way to the hall for the opening ceremony. The ceremony kicks off with introduction of the councils and messages from World Vision representative, Ms. Denise Ng and our Secretary Generals as well as from Worldwide Wildlife Fund (WWF) Malaysia. With that, it's time to reform!

Delegates make their way to their respective councils. The UNICEF council is a little far, it takes awhile to get there as this is my first time in the international school. UNICEF council starts with introduction of members and a brief explanation on how Model United Nations (MUN) works as a whole.

Since a delegate is representing two countries, we have to decide on a topic that delegates are debating for the next two days or so. At first, most of them want to do topic 2 which is child poverty. After re-vote, most of us choose the first topic on mental health- a cause I'm passionate in. Due to time constraints, our lobbying session which lasts about 15 minutes.

Day 2 continues with delegates arriving and continue to the topic which they left off on the first day. I had a hard time looking for my council as they shifted the room, luckily one of the admins are there to help me out. As the main submitter of the first topic, we work on the opening speech but we have a little trouble on the solution, we have to forgo ours and pass it on to the next group of submitter.

In the third council session, our topic is switched to the second topic which focuses on child poverty. Yet, our roles are changed to another country. Mine is switched from China to Switzerland. This time the whole council work together on a resolution.

I have a hard time in searching as we need to link back to our countries' policies, turns out it's harder than I thought. I'm in stress mode for that moment. I think this is the most stress topic we have done researched on, as compare to the the previous MUN conferences which I had attended. It's okay, this is where the learning process comes in.

After all that debating, it's time for delegate to let their hair down at social night or also known as socials. It's the best part of every MUN. My favorite part is definitely the performances! I'm back at centre stage again! The feeling is so good! Some of the committees have really awesome dance moves! I find it very cute!

The third and last day, we are back on the first topic which is on children's mental health. I tried to submit an amendment but it didn't turn out well. At least I tried, I'm sure I'll get a hang of it in my next MUN.  We have a karaoke session, a game of kahoot of guessing the flags of each county. At 1.00pm, we head to the main hall for the closing ceremony. Jia Fu and Soo Jin once again take the stage as emcees to host the ceremony.

A slide show of the three-day is shown on the screen and also upcoming MUNs in the next coming weeks and in early April. Awards are given out during the ceremony, and certificates are given in council earlier. One of the goal councils is tick off from the list! I'm honoured to represent the SUNMUN team in my first ever MUN in 2019. I'm looking forward to the next MUN.

I'm hoping to be the ambassador for UNICEF Malaysia because I love helping children wh looking forward to the next MUN. o are going through the same journey as me, of course mental health and education are in the list too! I'm hoping to bring the voices of Malaysian children in the real UN one day because this is what I fight for.

Asia Leadership Conference 2019 (23/2/19)

Asia Leadership Conference- I bet the students of Sunway University College is not a stranger to this event. Since I stepped into Sunway four years ago, my dream was to attend the Asia Leadership Conference. Due to the pricing, I let the chance slip away every time they held one but not this time, I decide to take charge of it!

I arrive at the corridor of JC 3, the attendant ask me to take out my student ID for confirmation of my attendance. I'm about to take it out from my bag, Ms. Wan inform the student attendants and they immediately hand my participant tag. As I look around, most of the students are either in college or started their first year of university, I'm the only student who is about to step into the final year of university, that makes me the oldest participant. It's okay, most people comment that I don't look like my age which is a good thing so that I can "blend in" with the other participants.

Breakfast is served at Art Gallery, the room is almost full! I have a hard time finding a seat. After savoring breakfast, it's time for us to proceed to JC 3. Once everyone is settled down, the emcee gives opening remarks to welcome the participants as well as distinguished speakers. To warm up, we have an interactive ice breaking session. After that, it's back to our places and Asia Leadership Conference is officially on the run!

The co-founder and president of Asia Leadership, Mr. Samuel Kim, introduced the speakers that we are meeting them today at their respective workshops and professional developments. Not long after, Mr. Kim talked about his growing up and his family life, especially the people that he met which made him become the person he is today- standing in front of people giving motivational talks. His working experience in the UN, catches my attention, cause I'm involved in the Model United Nations circuit, which I'm hoping to step into the real UN one day.

Anyway, participants are broken up into groups to head to their first workshop of the day. Mine is "Communicating as a Leader to Inspire and Motivate" by Mr. Matthew Turner.  What are the values that we must have in a leader? Work sheets are given out and find out the four values that we think as an individual leader, while the second part is to share about the experience. There are three things to remember when communicating as a leader
1) The story of me
2) The story of us
3) The story of now

After all that energy is resumed from lunch time, time to head for the second workshop. To identify the barriers, first we need to find what is the root of the problem and how we find ways to overcome it. The third segment which is the first professional development, I'm back with Mr. Turner. He gave us tips on how to deliver a professional presentation. Visual presentations are always the trick to catch the audience's attention, make sure always have a dark background with light colours.

The forth and final segment is Networking Essentials with Mr. John Lim. There are four useful guides when it comes to networking.
1) Give First
2) Use Their Names (at least mention three times in a conversation)
3) Focus on the person, which means maintaining eye contact at all times
4) Maintain contact, keep in touch at all times. Who knows you are the lucky one to be hired in their company some day? Or a strong recommendation for potential candidates in big companies?

Time to head back to JC3. A small dialogue is held and a quick sharing session on how we feel about the conference. If you asked me, my favorites are the workshops conducted by Mr. Turner and Mr. Lim. As a Communication student, I will learn how to communicate effectively in future. We collect our certificates at the end of the conference and taking photos of course, with the speakers and fellow participants to mark the day.

I'm so happy that I join the conference and gain a lot of experiences from it. I'm hoping to join the next conference.

Sunway CISA CNY 2019: 1970 Oriental Spring (22/1/19/-23/1/19)

1970 Oriental Spring Roadshow

Back to University: Year 2 Semester 3 (7/1/19)

The Malaysian new school season had already started, and for Sunway University was no exception. It’s back to university for us too! Time to hit the books and gear up for a whole new semester to ring in 2019.

I was really excited as I’m starting my third and final semester of Year 2. After settling down in the library, I had a tummy upset. I guessed we couldn’t avoid the nervousness no matter how confident we are. Anyway, after I made my way up, I received an email from the course department that the results from the previous semester (Year 2 semester 2) were released.

Quickly, I checked the results and made it through the second semester, which means the third semester of is officially on the run! I informed my family and friends about my achievement. After checking the results one last time, I logged out of the computer and settled at the university foyer. The Sunway University Chinese Cultural Society (SUCCS) was looking for potential actor and actress for their upcoming stage play.

I popped my bag at their booth for awhile and made my way to the college building to check out if there's any interesting, I ended up bumping into a few friends and course mates who I haven't seen over the holidays. As I was scrolling through my phone, my best friend and former MUFY course mate, XY, texted me whether I was on campus.

I had about half an hour before lecture, I guessed a little meet up would be fine since I didn't meet her for a long time. What a surprise! An unexpected visit! I took a photo of my location so that XY could easily look for me. She eventually read my mind! She brought me a drink from YOY Tea cafe, which I initially planned to go the place itself. I had a grape-lemon drink, it was really refreshing to ward off the intense heat and a cool way to chill before the first and only class started.

The time was neared 2pm, I headed to class and seemed to me everyone was excited to see their course mates after the month-long holiday, and I was no exception. I had a good catch up with some of the kids in the August 2017 batch from my course, Communication.

What an awesome way to ring in the new semester and new year! Join Katelyn in a whole new musical journey as she resumes her first day of university of the year.
